Cutting off right before they entered the new universe was one way in which the "ambiguous ending" thing actually worked. It was already established that the heroes were ready, willing, and able to rebuild their societies and enjoy their universe, so leaving the details up to our imaginations would have been fine, and would have fit with Homestuck's coming-of-age theme. Your adventures aren't over after you grow up, and you can never know for sure what the future holds, but if you prepare for it and have friends to help you, things can look pretty bright.
It's all the other ambiguous things that spoil it. Never-before-seen magical effects out of nowhere, magic items with totally unknown functions, massive world-changing events that can only have unprecedented effects... we have no way of knowing what most of that stuff is or does, and we have nothing to go on but wild guesses. We don't even know if they're actually going into the new universe, or if an unexplained and unprecedented event caused their victory door to have an unknown and unguessable different effect instead.

I could get away with the ending except that it felt that there was no ramp-up whatsoever. I read it a while back so my memory may be faulty but I remember every other major event (Descend, Cascade, Game Over) started as small consequences or actions built up over several weeks or months, culminating in a big [S] or sequence of pages where things popped the fuck off.
For the ending approaching Collide though the only thing I can remember is endless fucking talking.

Dead Vriska found a magic box with a magic house thingy called a juju. The juju gave John the power to retcon things. You probably remember this. Dead Vriska kept the magic box.
Everyone was killed off in a sudden and jarring manner. John and Roxy were the only survivors. Terezi gave John instructions before she died.
John traveled back to [S] Flip and punched Vriska so Terezi didn't kill her. This created a new alpha timeline where Vriska lived, fixing everyone's problems (she was shown to have alienated them too, but this was never brought up again).
Kids from either timeline (we don't know which) traveled to Caliborn's session using John's new magic powers. Caliborn had the magic box at the time and he trapped John, Jade, Dave and Rose in it. We don't know what happened to the Alpha kids after that.
Living Vriska traveled to the dream bubbles, humiliated dead Vriska, and took the magic box. She found dead Tavros with an army of ghosts he had brought together.
Lord English went to fight the army of ghosts. Vriska opened the magic box where John, Jade, Rose and Dave from whatever timeline were trapped, and some form of magic rushed towards LE as a result.
An alternate version of Calliope used magic to turn the Green Sun into a big black hole in the middle of the dream bubbles. People speculate the juju magic sent Lord English into the black hole, but we don't actually know what happened to LE after the juju magic was released. Maybe he was trapped in the magic box.
Cut to the kids entering the end door and a flashforward to them chilling in the new universe. The end.
