I doubt I could convince you to 180 on such a significant story opinion. I adore their designs, I found their body-sharing situation fascinating, I thought their dynamic was fun and interesting, I found Calliope charming and sympathetic, I found Caliborn hilarious and engaging, I thought their mystery fit the tone of the story, their reproductive process is grand and interesting, and I thought Caliborn's fucked up session was great. Lord English fell flat as a threat but he brought meaning back to death and the Felt and Scratch wouldn't have existed without him. He was a great unknown threat for most of the comic, I just wish it was followed through more at the end.

Don't get me wrong, I used to love Calli and Caliope as characters, the same way one could theoretically like say, Eridan or Mituna, or even Nepeta.
But they were hyped up so much and amounted to so little storywise that it really left a sour taste in my mouth and whatever interest in them there was, was sort of hard to manage with their irrelevancy. If their actual plot inclusions and uses are as engaging as their backstory and designs I might feel differently. I mean look at LE and Caliborn as a villain, he had a lot of development and focus put in throughout Act 6 but when it came to COLLIDE and the final showdown, he was a very minor footnote that was dealt with almost offhand, with the Noirs and Condy being more of antagonist then even him. The kids didn't really confront him (onscreen) at all and we don't SEE his active and physical antagonism of the kids and story so it seems really pathetic by comparison of the other villains, or even say Bec Noir who killed several characters directly, not implicitly.
LE just stayed out of the spotlight too long and did things backstage to be an effectual villain. It's like Dave said, why the fuck should they care about him anyway? What did he do to them personally, individually? And he's right.

Did we read the same comic? I read the one that had a really abhorrently disappointing and unsatisfying ending, and an adorable skull girl who was very charming and thoughtful.
I need your input. So I'm trying to pin point who the exact protagonists of Homestuck are, and I've found that characters introduced at the start of a Part (excluding Meenah) seem to fit this description. John appears on the first page with Part 1: Homestuck. Karkat appears about 2000 pages later in Part 2: Hivebent. Meenah, while not having an introduction page, is the point of view character for interacting with the rest of the Beforus trolls, so I believe that counts for something. Caliborn opens up Part 4 with Homosuck with Shitty John as his avatar. My only issue is that, while Jane opens up Part 3: Homestuck (Alpha), she doesn't behave in the same way as the other protagonists. So, /hst/, I have a question for you. Who of the Alpha kids is the protagonist of Part 3?

Actually, let me correct that. That was Alpha Calliope. AltCalliope was an interesting starting point for a character, though she didn't get fleshed out like she deserved. Like I said, Lord English was a letdown as a villain for the kids because he didn't do much to hurt them personally, he was just vaguely implied to be a universe-destroyer on the hunt for Calliope. LE lacks the charm of Caliborn and was generally a poor villain. But I don't think his poor handling ruined the best characters any more than Karkat's hilarious early logs are ruined by his downward trajectory into irrelevance.
Like, you juxtaposed her with The Mayor to emphasize how she's unimportant, and I totally agree he was poorly handled in Act 6, but WV's still an incredible character. One of my favorites in the whole comic! Spades dying before he could fulfill his dibs on English didn't retroactively ruin him. PM getting relegated to nothing but chasing Jack for an entire act didn't retroactively ruin her. They're good characters whose endings were poorly handled. That's all. You know what? Writing this post, I noticed the problem with the Cherubs is that a lot of their personalities are informed rather than shown.
Calliope is nice and cute because characters say she's nice and cute, even though she hasn't done a lot of nice and cute things.

In my humble opinion, Characters become less good based on what they do, or don't do, in the comic. You can have the coolest personality and design of all but without deeds to back it up your nothing but a pitch, a promise undelivered. That was what made Homestuck good early on, its use of show dont tell. On a basic level we depended more on actions and commands Then their pesterlogs.
Just look at the Alpha trolls. Great potential, no payoff.
I'm not one of those who reads a story for fanfics and fan art. So for me it's either be relevant and interesting in story, or never.

I'm blaming the cherubs failing to be relevant to the plot as a whole on poor handling, not anything about Calliope specifically. She was a good character and Lord English being a shitty villain doesn't ruin that is what I'm saying.
If I have one complaint about her character it's that she was relegated to Mayor-tier plush doll standalong shortly after her revival, which was relatively late-game and I wasn't expecting her to fight or anything as it was. She was pretty quiet back when Awful Useless Cat Rose was going around. I was hoping to see her engaging the other characters. I'll hold out to the epilogue for that.

Aside from Caliborn, he was consistently polite, friendly, and tried to be helpful with SBURB. She drew fanart of them to cheer them up. She wrote fanfiction of herself going on fun adventures with them and them resolving their romantic problems (which people call creepy, but she lived in a tiny room in another universe and her only socialization was with the romantic disasters that were the B2 kids, just let her live a little). And it's a visual comic, you can SEE the cute.

Vriska started out as the hidden mastermind, the sudden protagonist, the divisive anti-hero meant to rile up the fanbase, the Mary Sue parody.
She was the character with all the luck that got every second chance in the world, got away with everything and never learned.
