So as someone who started just before the pause for Cascade and jumped off the wagon literally the fucking page before Game Over (during the 1 year pause), I originally thought act 5 act 2 was the absolutely height of the comic and part 6 was one big mistep.
However over the past week I decided to reread the whole comic from the beginning, and while act 5 was a godamn joy to reread, I realized I was wrong about act 6. It certaintly dipped in enjoyability for a couple hundred pages after Cascade, but it ramped up waaaaaaaay better reading it archivally rather than having to wait between each update. It felt slow as shit in 2011, but coming back to it now it's actually really, really good.
That's not even including everything post Game Over, which I think might actually now be my favourite part of the whole comic now. Hundreds and hundreds of pages of juicy character development and a marriage of goofy shenanigans and serious business that is equal to, or maybe even better than act 5.
Collide was kind of disappointing from a visual standpoint, but Act 7 kind of more than made up for it in that aspect, and kind of blew me the fuck away with some of the visuals there. Anyway, I thought it was a fine enough ending. Coulda been better, yes, but I thought it was far from a bad conclusion. In fact I thought it would've been pretty fucking weird to have a big cliche climactic battle with the evil demon. Homestuck was always subversive for the hell of it and kinda meta-wanky, it makes perfect sense that the conclusion would the same way. Are people seriously this butthurt they didn't get Cascade 2.0? Didn't Hussie explicitly say that Cascade would be the biggest "climax" from a story perspective way back when it was fresh?

I don't buy it. The Felt intermission came after the end of an Act too, and it was fine. Intermissions are fine. They're breaks from the main story. The problem with Hivebent is that it stopped being an intermission after it was over.

I don't think that's true. Hussie's pace increased slightly during Hivebent but that's because he was focusing on getting through it. He kept it simple and knew all of the marks he wanted to hit going in. He wrote more, and drew and animated less.

This. I won't say the entire "finale" was a bust just yet, because the epilogue to Problem Sleuth made it a lot better. However, that doesn't mean the Ending wasn't complete and utter garbage. It may have been enjoyable if, at the time, it wasn't the ending of Homestuck. The fact that Hussie even thought that he could post that without an epilogue is astounding.
