Time to story time Hyperion's Annoying Tag-along #2. Hopefully this one's better than the first issue.
Hyperion seemed really underpowered in the first issue. I like the notion of the trucker hero finding himself in America, but it's sort of like they just drew Hyperion to be that guy out of a hat.
I mean, imagine this exact pitch, but withKaine and Aracely.

I'm just curious if this pitch was always based on Hyperion, or if Marvel gave Hyperion to a guy who decided on this, or if this was pitched completely different and Marvel decided it should be Hyperion because of the Squadron Supreme push.

Marvel seems pretty open to do almost anything one of their writers wants to do, if there's no conflict with other ongoings, it's entirely possible Wendig just went 'Hey, Man of Steel sucked, I bet I could write a better superman story' and everyone else went 'yeah, alright, you can borrow Hyperion, Virella and Fajardo'

When I saw the solicitation for "Worm-boy" I really wasn't sure this was going to be good, or carry the potential of the first issue.

Overall, I assume it's to do with the usual Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope alongside trying to attract the 18-to-24 female demographic by having a tagalong character with whom the reader can connect, in the same way that Snapper Carr was meant to be a relatable human character in the Silver Age Justice League stories.
Or something like that. It could just as easily be that writers can't into originality in character design.
