I always assumed that Korra was already taught how to use the avatar state from the order of the white lotus. Since she's been locked in a compound andtaught by them for most of her life, she probably already knew about chakras and shit already, wheras Aang had to go and seek someone. Korra only had to obtain her spiritual side for the teachings to take effect.

Neither of these things happened. The original Avatar's ending was a Deus Ex Machina, but everything in Korra was forshadowed and worked within what was established in both Korra and the original series.

How was the return of her powers foreshadowed? Not even in ATLA was Aang imbued with bending mastery by way of the other avatars just giving it to him. Hell, Lion turtles were foreshadowed more than the S1 end to Korra, even if I agree that the rock was dumb.
And yes it does handwave mechanics. In AtLA, mastery of the avatar state comes from mastery of oneself. How on earth does Aang, a spiritual Air Nomad, never learn of (or at least the audience is never informed of) the literal Light spirit that lives within him THAT HE CAN COMMUNICATE WITH AT WILL at no point in either his childhood with the nomads or his time unlocking his Chakras?
What was even the point of the Chakras? Korra doesn't deal with them at all. Aang should have just been able to ask Raava for help directly.

That's my beef with LoK: I do like a lot of things about it and I think it had a lot of good elements. But they weren't presented or mixed well and that just dragged everything down. It could have been an amazing show but it was only mediocre with little flashes of greatness, which is worse than if it had simply been entirely mediocre.
