Batman is a rich fucking self righteous chode with unwarranted self importance who thinks his individual experience gives him the right to boss everyone in Gotham lesser than him around.
He is not popular because of his own character, but mostly the conflict that comes with his better written villains.

Well, you're not wrong. Batman's way of combatting crime has always been of the more favorites, compared to shit like superman where he is just literally invincible.
But on top of that, you've got almost non-stop tragic villains who are all miserable or crazy in some twisted, cruel way or are just fucking the worst people in the world, and everything gets twisted up in this amazing gothic drama.
Remember that one TAS episode where Robin nearly kills Clayface, because of that girl he spawned being absorbed again?
