Not actually true, I got better at pen and paper despite only drawing on a tiny wacom for a year. Not as good as I would have gotten just going analog sure, but you do progress nonetheless.

The point of using references is learning to eventually NOT use references because you can envision the anatomy. Takes years to do it perfectly though.

Reference can be anything related to what you're trying to work on. Like, for example if you wanted to draw Judy in a certain pose, and you find a picture of a woman in that pose you could look at the picture to see how to draw Judy. Like, get a feel for how her weight is being distributed in her stance and that sort of deal.
Or, if you were working on fur texture for Nick, you could just use a picture of a real life fox to learn where fur is thicker, what colours to use, stuff like that.

I know small feels safer, but drawing big makes you use your whole arm. That makes curves much much easier. You can draw a perfect circle even after only a bit of practice. It also builds confidence. People feel scared and intimidated by the big blank space. But god damn it go ahead and fill it, you'll feel better.

If you're experienced though you can do alright with a small tablet. I personally hate working a small space though. I got the Intuos4 XL for that reason. Barely fits on my desk though.

Oh I'm not saying it's not possible, just easier. I'm a shortcut kind of guy. And there's not a lot of shortcuts you can take with learning to draw so I take what I can get.
