He can still try his best in a movie and fail. He can do his best, fail, and still have subjectively better movies. There are surely other factors. Superman and all the rest have their own source material but they were allowed to craft their own version of events, while Watchman and 300 more closely followed a set adaptation with less deviation and more closely setting up a movie version of events.

Yes the new ending makes more sense because the movie didn't have the metacontext of the original, but "stick Drm Manhattan in the role of the alien" was an idea that Moore himself had way back before Watchmen even finished being written. Hardly a new or avant-garde idea.

Even Watchmen which more or less held his hands in terms of plot had very similar issues to BvS in that it was style over substance through and through. Whatever philosophical things brought up came off so airheaded and shallow that they would have been better off not including them at all. And there were plenty of elements in both that he saw fit to keep in for whatever reason that logically didn't make sense like having WW take a 4 minute break in the movie to look at the files inBvS when it could have gone during the credits or afterwards and in Watchmenkeeping in Bubastus without any sort of explanation or reasoning as to why it was around in the first place. I could go on. Also notice that Watchmens reviews were very mixed and his response was to release of my memory serves no less than 2 expanded editions in addition to the films theatrical release. And look what happened to BvS. I saw this coming a mile away when he was hired onto MoS but I think I wanted to believe like everyone else. But obviously this shows that Snyder is just a hack trying to do things out of his skill range as a director. It's not that he wants the films to fail. He's doing his best but his best is not suited for what he's trying to do.

The characters actually have real power and take things serious. The themes are very deep and explored in depth. Meanwhile all Marvel films are just quippy quippy lolfests where nothing really matters and they don't even try to be deep or look good. DC films are inspired by great filmmakers like Terrence Malick and Lynch, they don't just pick dumb fucking TV directors to make stupid capeshit because they're only interested in making true kino.

The sheer amount of craft and symbolism in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is akin to the highest forms of art.
