Is Knightfall worth the 1800-pages it's going to take to read? I know it's a significant event in Batman's history and everything, but I mean more as to whether it's an actual interesting story with cool themes, or whether there's any particularly nice artwork in there, or if it's just another Batman story.

Hell no.
The first act (up to Batman getting his body broken) is enjoyable and good.
Second act is mostly shit (New-Batman taking Bane down)
Third act is utter shit (Bruce mending his body and Jean-Paul getting crazy)
Fourth act is kinda okay (Bruce training himself again and taking down JPValley). The last issue (aka the Batman vs Batman battle) is exceptionnaly well written though.
Read it if you're still a student / have enough time on your hand. If not don't bother
