That wouldn't have been that General Egregious a design if it included an armored mask. A Mon Cal mask like Grievous? Sure, it could look cool. Maybe. That art style is still a bit iffy.

Since we're on the topic of the old EU: How much of it do you think they're going to put back into the canon?
I know the R6 droids from the old canon were props in TFA, and we've had some Legends stuff pop up in Rebels, but how far do you think they'll really go with that vs. making entirely new things?

We're probably going to see nearly all the technical details of the old EU put back into canon. Ship classes, tech specs, that sort of thing. They're already doing it.

I expect certain large EU stories might be vaguely recanonized, with substantial changes in detail. There's enough room between ROTJ and TFA, for example, for something like the Thrawn Trilogy to have happened, though of course they'd have to heavily modify it to make it make sense with their new canon. Ditto for the KOTOR/TOTJ stories, though they have a bit more leeway there.

Honestly I just want good stories in Star Wars. The reason I'm so attached to the old EU is that it DOES have good stories. It has fantastic stories. They're outnumbered by a lot of garbage, but they're there. I just want good stories in Star Wars. I'm worried that we won't get them under Disney. That's my main problem with the nu-canon.

It's all good, anon. Talk some Star Wars with us. Plenty of Legends were comics and even cartoons. All are welcome.

With that pic, I wonder what they'll do with that lady who is "cloud computing" with probe droids. She seems to be the least offensive so far and I believe Vader has used her in the past. As the least assuming she might end up as the most dangerous. Or not. Didn't Vader say they were all fleeing with their master? Hell, Cylo is probably already in Palpatine's chambers when Vader called him up on the holophone.

I personally like it, at least someone here knows what the fuck they're talking about. I mean it's certainly better than the /co/ vs. /tv/ shitposting, waifuposting, and constant PT vs. OT vs. ST shitposting.

I love talking about Star Wars and peoples ideas and assumptions even based on little things like lightsaber hilts, robe designs, their personal characters, not sitting around just shitposting constantly, I stopped caring about that 10 years ago when I was 15 and on /b/.

So you're welcome to stay in my book, can't speak for anybody else though.

It's pretty fun for a racing game, and one of the better uses of the Star Wars license. Good variety of courses and characters. Downsides would have to be the cutscenes (which show their age) and having to put up with Jake Loyd dialogue.

Kiner has been gracious enough to make a lot of that freely available on his website and soundcloud, so at least there is that. Not sure how freely they'll let him do that after he posted Ahsoka's Fate early! I think the track was fine since it was mostly in the trailer, but the name was too much.

Han's using the saber in episode 5 is different simply because he wasn't actually trying to fight anyone with it. Cutting open a Tauntaun is different from running around with a lightsaber and trying to actually fight with it. It pissed me off in TFA when Finn did it and it pisses me off here. Now do you have any actual arguments?

Okay, I'm willing to admit that I made an error in saying that non-force users are completely unable to wield a lightsaber. With the right training and under the right circumstances it is entirely possible to wield a lightsaber in combat effectively. Mind you, the training I'm talking about takes years of dedication.

>>
>>81881279
Why is there an issue with a non force user weilding a lightsaber?
>>
>>81881502
I'm glad you asked anon. A lightsaber's weightless you see, as the beam is made of plasma, subsequently making it rather unwieldy. The force is the only thing keeping jedi from the not cutting themselves in the heat of battle. But as I said earlier, it's not entirely impossible for a non-force user to wield one in combat so long as they have adequate training.
>>
>>81881378
No anyone who has even the most basic idea of how to hit something with a thing in your hand could wield a lightsaber. It would be dangerous to them if they accidentally nicked themself, it would be completely useless against an even nominally skilled fighter with a lightsaber of their own, and it would be useless at blocking blasters and shit.

But if im in a room with five dudes who wanna beat my ass and i pick up a fucking lightsaber...theyre all gonna die and i'll probably be fine. No force or training necessary.
>>
>>81881378
I don't have the scan at hand, but in one book was a crosssection of his head with a brain implant highlighted that was a "memory upgrade containing jedi techniques" or something. Whether that mashes well with Dooku training him is another matter.

You'd be fine for a swing or two maybe, sure. But in a prolonged fight to say that the most you'd get away with would be nothing more than a "nick" is nothing but wishful. I have a quote I saved from a previous thread that I hope will finally bring this argument to and end and shed some light on the conversation:

Anyone familiar with fencing or swordplay knows that the weight of the handle and blade, and thus the overall balance of the weapon, is critically important while fighting. A sword that is too blade-heavy is unwieldy; it is difficult to start, stop, and change the path of the blade as it's swung, which is vital to outmaneuvering your opponent in a duel. Conversely, a sword with too light a blade (equivalently, too heavy a hilt) is too easy to swing around. it's hard to "feel" where the blade is, and thus to make the minute changes needed to block a blow or land one. It can also be just as exhausting, in a different way, to wield such a sword; because most of the mass is behind your hand, it takes muscle power to point the blade forward instead of upward, while a balanced weapon would point directly forward from the user's hands. You also get no mechanical advantage while swinging it.

Obviously, out-of-universe the props were full "swords" that were then rotoscoped to paint the beam blade over the white wooden (later plastic) dowel that protruded from the saber. This gives the actual prop used by the actors a more realistic weight and balance, which can be seen in the duels (Darth Maul has to heave a bit to get that double-saber staff moving, and you can see the effort behind a full baseball swing of the sword by Luke or Vader in the original trilogy).

>>81881658
Thanks for the assistance and all anon, but unless that scan is from a currently canon comic it doesn't do much for us.
>>
>>81881566
Not really seeing the problem. It's not like Han, Chewie and Leia were dueling another lightsaber wielder. Han even points out that he's completely uncomfortable with using one in that issue.

Heres the thing. the thing being argued is stemming from a picture of han holding a lightsaber.
the reply to it was that it was the most cancerous panel of the marvel star wars comic line. and then that it is silly defending non force users wielding lightsabers.
Well in this situation it isn't han deciding to take up the lightsaber over some prolonged period of time in lieu of his blaster. Him chewie and leia have no blasters...so they rock some lightsabers. It presents a danger to themself, but the danger of enemy troops trying to kill or capture you is greater than that of you accidentally killing yourself with a lightsaber.

It's silly to take issue with this particular image and call it the most cancerous thing of the line when in context it makes perfect fucking sense for them to do this shit.

except chewie who could just rip the stormtroopers apart quite honestly.

But people still take HUGE issue with it because they can't deal with something that doesn't fit with a concept pushed by EU logic (only force users can wield a lightsaber).

I'm being serious. What you see on-screen has nothing to do with real swordplay. Trying to apply actual swordfighting knowledge to it doesn't work. As it is, you're trying to come up with a rational explanation for why someone without the Force shouldn't be able to use a weapon that already exists outside of rational explanations. Even the "the lightsaber is weightless" argument has no meaning because even though logically we would assume that the only weight the blade has is the weight of the hilt itself, we've never seen the lack of weight be a problem for anyone, even inexperienced users.

So basically you're overthinking this and getting upset that a fictional universe doesn't match up with explanations you're trying to force on it. You're a step away from "but there's no sound in space!"
>>
>>81881796

Hell, I think even the EU came up with some weird explanation for why the lightsaber feels like it has weight. So even then, the weightlessness was a non-issue.
>>
>>81881907
>I'm just upset over the fact that none of them suffered any injuries as a result of their actions.
If you ask me them not being injured themself is consistent with the kind of fantasy typical of star wars. why is it them having lightsabers in their hands means they should suddenly be at the behest of real world logic and circumstance?
Do you feel the death star scene in the a new hope where theyre running away from all those stormtroopers as theyre fired upon with blasters is 'the most cancerous thing in the star wars movies' because logically trained soldiers would be able to hit them at least a couple of times?

I mean honestly, honestly consider why this one thing bothers you...when other instances of unrealistic shit happening might not.

I can't see any reason for this really being so bothersome because of real world logic which nobody has a problem with not applying to the rest of this universe except the EU stand by that makes it taboo for anyone who doesn't have the force to so much as swing a lightsaber.

As far as I know there are almost NO references to the prequels and if you have never seen a single one of them essentially nothing in episode 7 makes any less sense. I can't think of a single fucking callback to the prequels with two exceptions and neither don't work without the prequels.
1: the first line of the force awakens. Which is possibly an actual fucking DIG at the prequels.
2: the possibility snoke is in fact darth plageus which is referenced in a story in episode 3 obviously.

But besides that I can't think of anything from the prequels really referenced in the new movie so how are they not ignored?

Also, Kylo Ren floats the idea of a clone army when mocking Hux about Finn's defection. Which is weird, how he's lording it over Hux that this ONE trooper out of however many tens of thousands went rogue, even if Finn is causing a hell of a lot of trouble for a single rogue trooper.

Also, a few lines after the first line of the movie, Lor San Tekka references the need for balance in the Force.

Gigantic, explicit, overt references to the prequels would be very much out of place. In-setting, it's been 53 years since the fall of the Old Republic. That's an awfully long time. Even though the PT was built to interlock with the OT, it still respected that the 19 year gap was so huge that only a few monumentally important events from the PT merited mention in the OT, and exploited that freedom to the fullest. When you tack on another 30 years, it exaggerates this.

Even so, there are a lot of little things here and there. The prequels aren't gone, nor is Disney pretending they are. The upcoming movie Rogue One really has no choice but to reference the prequels directly in some fashion. The upcoming young Han Solo movie in 2018 will also have to acknowledge history to some degree.

It set a good foundation for the future of star wars.

I enjoyed it, I just wish it was a little more daring.
>>
>>81882423

I hated TFA and think the prequels are A) better than TFA and B) signficantly underrated in general.

But yeah, we have TFA lovers, TFA haters, prequel lovers, prequel haters, etc. It takes all kinds.

Plinkett fans are basically brain dead at this point. Mike unwillingly made a new generation of snide internet critics who horrifically dissect every movie they watch.

TFA might have some flaws, flaws the original Star Wars suffered from but its nowhere Prequel bad and to imply that makes you autistic.

Just can't wait for the assravage from /tv/ when that Plinkett review comes out and its not the circle jerk they wanted

>>81882423
I liked it, but it wasn't without a few things that bugged me.

The only real solid letdown for me was that the opening was full of shakeycam and Supreme Leader Snoke at this point being Palps 2.0.

Other than that though, I generally found it enjoyable, highlights being Finn and Poe shenanigans (which I want some comics about goddamn).

Not part of TFA but C3PO Red Arm origin gets more tragic when you realize they erased his memory of the emotive experience rather than deal with another protocol droid getting PTSD.

but mike actually liked it, why would he annihilate it as plinkett?

hell likely treat it like star trek 09.

If the jedi were able to survive long enough to bring down palpatine and cancel order 66 I believe the only course of action would be a full lock-down of the senate. They might have employed some sort of strange Jedi-esque marshal law for a brief time before ultimately handing power back to the senate. The jedi have only ever wanted to serve the republic as peacekeepers, it wouldn't be in their interest to take permanent control. This is all of course assuming that there even is a way to cancel order 66 asides from the removal of the clone chips.
>>
>>81882526
i meant to say why would his fans and /tv/ think he would annihilate it as plinkett.
>>
>>81882537
The Jedi would have had support from at least some portion of the Senate, but they might be seen as an oligarchy or a partial military coup.

That might have actually revitalized the Separatist faction, although IIRC they were all but gimped at that point.
>>
>>81882306

>if the jedi defeated the clones after order 66, do you think they would have seized power to ensure their survival, like what Palpatine convinced everyone was going to happen without it?

The jedi are already huge assholes trying to control everything during the clone wars.

If there was no order.66 the jedi probably would have become an even worse Empire.
>>
>>81882482
The background stuff is fun. The Alliance really did restore the Republic, complete with Palpatine's Emergency Powers that let Mon Mothma order the New Republic fleets anywhere and kick the Imperial Remnant's ass, but she didn't think that much power belonged in any one person's hands. Return the military to the Senate's control with her just as the head of the Senate, basically a glorified moderator, and the Republic military forces scaled back to ~10%.

Also things like Phasma's silver (chromium) armor is build from salvage from Palpatine's personal Naboo cruiser. A ton of other stuff, up to and including Wedge was recruited by Fulcrum (Rebels era reference but close enough).
>>
>>81882565
Yeah the CIS was all but beaten and the cabal working for palps were on the run. Any insurrection that would have arisen as a result of the changes in the senate would have been swiftly put down.
>>
>>81882597
>Return the military to the Senate's control with her just as the head of the Senate

As politically naive as that is, it's kind of fitting for Star Wars politicians to be awful either intentionally or not. I actually don't mind it, if only we get a scene where Leia just scowls at whoever survives in the Senate and doesn't even say "I told you so."

Speaking of which, the decision to nuke Hosnia on screen but have it be the capital off-screen was kind of weird. I like it in that it indulges in the worst Star Wars instinct I have (EVERYTHING'S GOTTA BACKSTORY), and I hate it in that it feels a little bit unnecessary when you look at it from the perspective of plot criticism.

I'm fairly certain Artoo would be closer to make that kind of statement, no wonder he had Standby-mode Depression for like 15 years.
>>
>>81882653
I dont't see it as especially naive. After all they just fought a massive civil war to defeat the dictatorship of the Emperor and are still mopping it up after his death. They don't want another powermad asshole getting in and suddenly he doesn't need Jar Jar to assume military control.

Besides she made sure to set it up so individual worlds can raise their own defensive armies. She doesn't want them reliant on the Republic for everything, and cutting back the military means if a huge threat looms, like say some kind of First Order, the individual armies can unite in another Alliance.

Rotating the capital also makes perfect sense. They don't want the New Republic consolidating power in the Core anymore. A rotating capital helps free up some of their politics from local corruption.

Now, it's true that it does kind of FEEL like Disney is ignoring the prequel era right now. Here's why.

What's actually happening right now is that the OT's EU is growing at a massive rate to catch up after the wipe. The canon wipe meant that the PT era was three movies plus TCW, while the OT era was just three movies.

TCW is HUGE. 121 episodes, plus the story reels and Son of Dathomir. We're still getting new prequel-era content, too, like Obi-Wan & Anakin, or the Kanan comic. I'd count Lords of the Sith and Tarkin, too. It's just that the prequel era has slowed to a trickle, while the OT era is drinking from a fire hose to catch up now.

The ST era also needs a big share of attention too. It'll probably speed up massively once VIII is released, while this torrent of OT EU will likely slow down. Then, after IX, once the OT era and ST era are suitably large, the PT era will probably get another turn for some rapid expansion, until a new trilogy starts up.

There are also a pod-racer engine on Jakku, the speeder Rey has has parts of a pod-racer engine on it, there is the entire force vision beginning with the murder of the younglings. Phasma's armor is based on the Naboo ships melted down, particular one of Palpatine's (which knowing he was from Naboo is a PT only thing).

They don't do a lot of pandering to the PT just because it's been so long since The Clone Wars and such, but it is there. Hell one of the flags's at Maz's place is a reference to Sabine as well. I mean that's Rebels and all and not the PT, but there are tons of easter eggs and references all over the damn place.

>>81882777
How old is he, about 60-ish? That's not really that old for a droid.
>>
>>81882779
Breaking up the solidarity of the Rebel Alliance was a pretty bad move, IMO. While the intent was to do away with a dictatorship, the Alliance clearly lacked the administrative capacity to police their own Senate.

They ended up creating less of a Republic and more of a confederation, each segment gained more autonomy and a less centralized power source. There's nothing wrong with this in concept, it's just that in the SW galaxy the moment somebody gets a tinesy bit of freedom they become comically corrupt, to the point where the Senate was compromised and unable to recognize the First Order threat.

Also a rotating capital exchanges centralized power blocs for alternating sets of regional power blocs. I don't know how the capital is decided, but undoubtedly the system appointed exercises some sway.

He's at the very least 66, likely older considering he seems to have been around for some time before TPM.
>>81882777
I'd assume R2-D2 was shut down to prevent the map from being found more than anything.
>>
>>81882863
The amount of years is thickened with the events that take place in them, and if you consider his life of service in CW+ ROTS, the spionage in Rebels and the events of the OT, the build-up of the new Jedi Order only to see it torn down again... that's different than being a loyal GNK for 200 years.

>>81882894
I don't wanna start another argument here but I favor the Robodepression. What kind of fail-safe conditions did Luke install so R2 would wake up again?
>>
>>81882885
>They ended up creating less of a Republic and more of a confederation

Because that's exactly what they are. The Empire and the remnants that became the First Order are the Republic, they are the path the real Republic went down, whether that's a bad thing or not doesn't matter, they had all the surplus of money, they had the technology, they had basically everything. When the Empire fell all they had to do was scrounge it all hope and escape to the Unknown Reaches and rebuild, after 30 years, definitely possible. While the Rebels for what they were worth were the equivalent to the CIS trying to establish their own Government, treaties, trade organizations, etc. The same would have happened had the CIS won The Clone Wars, it'd have been a messy Confederacy at best while the Republic has massive fleets and power still from what was left over that was scrounged up.

As for why they didn't want to recognize the First Order as a threat, they likely just didn't want to get involved in another war, especially with them trying to re-establish the Republic how it was before the Imperial Founding. I think it's less about being incompetent and more so they know they couldn't win head to head, not without Luke Skywalker and stuff and at the time the First Order was probably just making nameless threats while they built in secret.

The capital was decided if I recall from the TFA databook was because Coruscant had a lot of bad blood and they didn't want to relive the past with how the Empire was founded, the Jedi Purge, the entire Senate corruption, and all the shit of the Old Republic too.

>I don't wanna start another argument here but I favor the Robodepression. What kind of fail-safe conditions did Luke install so R2 would wake up again?

Oh droidepression is all good, that's just my personal theory on it at least. I assume it was more of a fail-safe that he'd re-power after so long. I think the canon explanation was that he was close to the other section of the map with BB-8, which doesn't make sense since he should have woken up earlier, but whatever. I just personally assume he had a timer on him after so long.
>>
>>81882969
> were the equivalent to the CIS trying to establish their own Government, treaties, trade organizations, etc.

The CIS were always co-opted by an oligarchy of cooperate powers, their democratic or federated systems were effectively controlled on two levels by both major corporate and financial entities like the Trade Federation (who took advantage of opportunity to play the war for monetary gains) and on a higher level by the Sith.

The majority of the CIS's military hierarchy were tied to droid production, it's unlikely that there would have been a similar fragmentation of authority had the CIS won, but there might instead have been a concentration/conglomerate authority of independent parties working in tandem.

In other words, the CIS seemed primed to produce to hegemony, not a confederacy.
