Some people can give into addiction as a crutch for their inability to cope with themselves since people have lower expectations of addicts and its easier to get sympathy. I did that once and honestly being a useless bum and a leech is almost more appealing than the substance itself because when you give yourself to it you are less responsible for your own actions.

If you beat your addiction you're forced to take accountability for your actions. My individual circumstances were such that I had serious issues with my esteem and ego way before I started drinking and so when I stopped I had an avalanche of shit come down on my that had been building up since I was a kid in addition to the other issues of alcohol abuse.

I hate to advocate weed for this reason but if you combine it with physical exercise and only smoke in the evening it may potentially help you not think about drinking because you'll be exhausted and dumb.

A bit at firs but its not bad for your sleep cycle. It helped me because if you start smoking in the evening instead of drinking you'll get tired earlier and want to sleep. Then you can start to fix your sleep schedule by setting an alarm earlier as you get used to not staying up late drinking.
