Well they kind of explain that with the episode where it's revealed he had an awful childhood and had no friends so that's how he entertains himself while he's doing cooking related things.
It doesn't help that he's very cognizant of the fact that his wife is kind of dumb, and his children are selfish assholes.
He's just a weird dude that likes to pretend he's not as weird as everyone else in his town, but he actually is.
