Same. It really made a difference that I had no idea it was coming, and when it did I was so shocked I just felt numb all over and had to pause the movie for a minute. It's not that the scene itself was so awful, it was more the complete and total surprise I was punched in the gut with. I don't think any other movie has done that to me before.

That's one interpretation. One of the dogs had vivid hallucinations all throughout the book due to his brain surgery. You could also interpret the rescue and the reunion with the dog's former master as his last hallucination as he drowns.
