Somehow the shitty artists always manage to be cocky and boisterous enough to convince people that they are good and never seem to get any better.

Do you have any examples? I assume there must be artists who can pass themselves off as Japanese, but I've never seen it (as far as I know).
>>
>>81692188
If Russia is considered western I know a western artist who can draw just like a good Japanese doujinshi artist.

But for some reason most of the western artists, even competent ones, have some characteristic traits that makes their art different from Japanese ones. I guess their foundations are different and a western artist can use his high skill to emulate the style but like video game emulation to be able to emulate perfectly a console you need a much more powerful machine. Maybe the fact that Japanese writing system is that freaking complicated thing have something to do with it as Chinese artists can do it just fine.
>>
>>81689037
Because people who try to do the style seriously use those shitty "how to draw anime" books to teach them, while everyone else intentionally draws it shit to make fun of all the cliches anime has going for it, like massive eyes.

I think many manga artists are amateurs having their first chance of being published. I mean, they send their works and some of them are selected so they are published. It is not that uncommon to see a manga starting with a amateur art level and improve as the manga goes. This can work because manga is published in phone list thick magazines with many different authors in the same magazine and is good because it is constantly bringing new ideas and authors to the medium. The inconvenience is that it limits severely the use of color and the art can be pretty unpolished depending on the author skill level.
>>
>>81701188
Damn thats a good system, if only a similar thing exsisted for western comics instead of rehashed ober the top quality art
>>
>>81700948
> mfw when the greatest MLM price of fan art is a picture saying /co/ has no taste.
>>
>>81701381
This is why manga is in black and white and just have a few colored pages. Every issue they give the spotlight to one artist and he makes some colored pages for his manga that is published together with tons of other mangas. To make it accessible they have to be in cheap paper and in black and white. This system also makes the readers buy a huge block with lots of different stories from different authors in it if they want to read the last issue of his favorite manga so they end up knowing about the other stories too giving a little known artist to become famous. Latter the manga can be republished in a book format containing only it for people to read it/collectors.

This is why new writers boom from time to time. When a story is interesting, even if nobody ever heard about the author before it have the chance of being published together with other famous authors and even with another popular series so it can get some collateral public and boom.

How? I mean Wagner is super bombastic and everyone knows Valkyrie and the Lohengrin bridal chorus, but how many people do you know who'd actually appreciate what Tristan and Isolde did in full or could even manage to sit through a full Ring cycle?

Jojo at best hints at the possibility of depth, but it's fundamentally the forerunner of everything that makes modern shounen shounen, and in a way that's every bit that dumb.

It's not even a shounen anymore. If you're gonna use a demograph as a description of a genre. At least try to get it right. Even if it was a shounen what does that even mean? I'm a manga fan, and by that I mean I follow more than the shonen shlock you see peddled on toonami. I've put some thought into it. I think its because when an actual manga artist goes about learning to draw they don't try an imitate anything, they learn to draw and develop a style, the fact that it looks like it belongs in a manga is because they naturally pick up Japanese design sensibilities and don't have to try and force it. Western artists are stuck trying to imitate a "style" and it ends up being bad.

Honestly, people need to understand that there isn't one manga style just like there isn't one western style. Compare stuff like One Piece to Berserk or Shoujo manga to Keyman and you'll see that the one animesque/manga style is a false preconception held by people who only take a passing glance at whats drawn.

Gamer phase?
"I'm white and middle class enough to be black if I want to be" phase?
Skater phase?
>>
>>81713690
Avatar is upper mid-tier action shonen when it comes to drama. You find its comedy to be better because you have western sensibilities.
>>
>>81718451
Did you have a "I suck my friend's dicks but only because they ask me to and I respect that. I'm not gay." phase?
>>
>>81717538
I've seen some Canadian animation that's better than I would expect. Not a lot, though.

The problem is more that this show is a time-displaced relic from the dark age of the weeby mid-2000's.

>>81718384
>It is the quintessential shounen
Is it really, though? I always thought it was more seinen.
>>
>>81718530
Gamer phase, I got that one. I'm not white and have no desire to be black either. And I haven't broken a bone yet, and I don't wanna start.

He went to college and does commercials for said college. If I remember correctly Bow Wow was pissed at him for it.
>>
>>81696233
the animation actually isn't that bad
>>
>>81718575
Nah. I'm comfortable enough in my sexuality to say I'd suck dicks.
>>
>>81718422
You're probably too young or too old. The big period for "anime phases" was the mid-2000s, so if you were a teen during that period, there's a good chance it would've hit you like a ton of puberty bricks.
>>
>>81702335
>>81701188
Its also worth mentioning that manga magazine are also dirt cheap. Like five dollars for a brick containing 20 different series cheap.

It's printed on newsprint and is black and white. It's as cheap as you can get, the going right is less than 700 en.
>>
>>81718584
>I always thought it was more seinen.
Seinen is probably the most nebulous Jap demographic content wise. The works that are collectively considered seinen have almost nothing in common aside from the fact that they are. Shoujo and shounen have a bunch of stuff that you can point to and say are representative of their mainstream content.

I've always especially liked this one because it's basically what happens to every single one of my groups campaigns. The one time the more edgy member tried to DM and take everything to Grimderp town we all went out of our way to lighten it up.

>Shoujo and shounen have a bunch of stuff that you can point to and say are representative of their mainstream content.
If you ever needed something to point at, I would say Bebop is the most representative example for westerners.
>>
>>81718697
Yeah me too. I just want to make sure my friends know I'm NOT gay because I did them a favor.
>>
>>81718451
gay phase?
>>
>>81719025
IT'S NOT A 'PHASE' DAD
>>
>>81718907
Bebop is anime original, and thus doesn't fall into manga demographics.
>>
>>81719112

Finally, someone with a brain.
>>
>>81698477
Slapping characteristics of anime/manga together to make cheap imitation without understanding the fundamentals of 3d objects and figure drawing.
>>
>>81719140
Isn't it fun watching /co/ try to discuss manga? They have no idea what they're talking about.
>>
>>81719165
The first part is right. Slapping together tropes from japan without knowledge of how they really work is the problem. Personally, I don't have a problem with westerners borrowing from Japan and I don't think think it matters if they get the techniques. But, that era of copying anything Japanese back in the aughts was awful.
>>
>>81719251

Yeah, It's almost like the people posting on the western cartoon and comics broad don't read or watch much manga and anime.

Such a weird coincidence.
>>
>>81719315
I understand that. But have the good grace to know when you're out of your depth. Discussing what the most iconic anime or manga is, is a little silly, don't you think?
>>
>>81719315

That's fine if they don't know. I just wish they didn't act so obnoxious about it.

the manga's an adaptation, stupid
>>
>>81721120
Still a manga.
>>
>>81721120
I know, but it's bizarre to suggest that an adaptation can't have a target demographic. Are they just selling manga to tulpas and ghosts now?

Also, I'd never actually seen the manga before, and the art style is way more shoujo than I would've expected.

I'm glad that my disgust for anime developed at a young age. I can definitely see an alternate version of myself developing into a neet weeabo if left unchecked.

Yep. Another thing people tend to forget is that Rareware pushed for the show, not Nintendo.

>my disgust for anime

In what sense? Like I totally get having a dismissive attitude to the whole Japan Is Awesome line of thinking and being reasonably critical of the bulk of it, but just outright hating anime on principal seems to be something that only old religious dudes who imagine it's all about selling plastic shit to little boys seem to really do.
>>
>>81718191
In a world where Johnny Test can have more than 100 episodes, anything is possible.
>>
>>81722349
I was only exposed to mainstream anime and I hated most of them. My parents where kind of strict so I wasn't allowed to watch any of the decent stuff on Adult Swim so that was my only experience with it, outside of the gigantic weeaboos in middle school. I thought DBZ was the most boring shit I've ever watched despite nearly everyone I knew loving it.

>I thought DBZ was the most boring shit I've ever watched despite nearly everyone I knew loving it.

Yeah, that's completely reasonable. I wouldn't blame anyone surrounded by DBZ and Inuyasha fanatics for wanting to get far away from it. It is possibly to approach anime in a healthier way though.

>The creator said they made it for their daughter who was big into DeviantArt and manga at the time.

Ok, that makes a little more sense then. Like, it otherwise makes no sense that such a thing would be so mired in western cartoon cliches.
>>
>>81722752
I'll watch the odd anime or read the rare manga every now and again but I also dislike the general way most anime/manga draw faces. Anything that comes close to what Strongbad describes as anime is shit I can't stand.
>>
>>81714442
was this show really any good? /co/ seems to like it a lot, but I never bothered with it because of how cheap it looks
>>
>>81723636

It's fantastic. It's also absolutely cheap as hell, but it almost in an ironic way. It's effectively Americans bashing on japan in a good natured way. Sort of like when they add in an American character who is literally just Elvis or a cowboy who swears a lot.
>>
>>81688430
... is impossible if you are not japanese
>>
>>81700785
That's just for getting serialised.

The real money in the manga business is in the tankobons, aka. the volume releases.

Unlike America, mangaka generally get to maintain ownership and rights of their works so once they publish the books, they keep a bigger portion of the sales instead of getting like 10 cents a book like in America.

So there's a lot of motivation to put out something good that'd interest readers enough to buy books a year or so later after you start.

I blame Quebec.

It's always Quebec.

They hog all the funding then cry foul when we bitch at them for wasting it.

Real talk if you don't like Xabungle, G Gundam, Ghost Stories dub etc. you just have bad taste.
>>
>>81725275
I like the Ghost Stories dub, but that was just a shitty and forgettable anime that got dubbed over with funny jokes.

Never even heard of Xabungle before now. As for Gundam, I only have a few hazy memories of various Gundam shows from my childhood. I preferred the more serious series over G Gundam however, I recall not liking it to a certain extent but like I said I can barely remember shit about it.

Cowboy Bebop still remains my favorite anime, as pleb as it may be.
>>
>>81725456
Well Xabungle takes the piss out of everything.
If you get the chance you should watch it.
And try watch Ginguiser as well.

Yeah the anime cliches are stupid and the show is kinda dumb... but fuck me, I still enjoyed it.

That or I just have shit taste in general.

Personally the art and animation style reminded me too much of Martin Mystery and I fucking hated that show.

>The real money in the manga business is in the tankobons, aka. the volume releases.
Western floppies have been written for the trades for years, so that's not a uniquely foreign thing. The creator relationship definitely is, though.
>>
>>81718698
For me it was around 1998 - 2004.
>>
>>81727207
Yeah, late 90s to mid 2000s is probably more accurate. It started with Pokémon and Toonami, basically.
>>
>>81721508
The manga's target demographic IS shoujo. It ran in a shoujo magazine. If it had run in a shounen magazine then its target demographic would be shounen.
