It is actually a misunderstood masterpiece that we've failed to truly grasp.
The comic is literally called dumbing of age, and that's just what the comic is doing.
As the comic gets older, the characters, no the whole world of the comic gets dumber.
This was the plan all along and before the comic end, it will hit the point where even the most obsessed fans will see that this comic is really about Wills slowly following a self fulfilling prophecy.
