Live theater has this very specific line where big production values stop being cool and start being tacky. And if the story is shit (as it frequently is in musicals) it becomes downright annoying. As the show screams and throws shit in your face and deep down you think "Fuck I don't care about these people"
It's the reason why the Spiderman Musical was a disaster. It's why Shrek and the Grinch close after 6 months but a show like "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" where Snoopy is played by a guy in a Tee shirt can run for years and get solid reviews.
