Reading around the Internet regarding Danny's race, and it's importance to his and Luke's bond. Some really astute points were made by people.
For example, their friendship is something they have to socially fight for.
Men in their positions are rarely ever friends, let-a-lone interact. They never hang out in the same circles, too far apart. You would feel the tension, and even in Danny/Luke's friendship its still there in the foreground.
Danny's social equals would see Luke as a "Thug", and Misty a "Golddigger", Luke's social equals would regard him as a "sell out" or gosh even a "coon" for having a White Billionaire as a BFF, and having a white wife. (I think the newest Powerman even implied this.) Extereme bigots from both of their social groups would regard them as "Race-traitors".
Considering the historical animosity between White and Black Americans, these are guys shouldn't be friends, and yet they're a close as brothers. (Does probably help Danny was raised as an ethnic minority in another culture, before returning to a life of privilege. It's easier for a person on the top to go down, than it is for a person on the bottom to go up.)
