Laurel represents a lot of things tumblr likes - she's a capable, independent woman with her own character arc and struggles with mental illness. The only things that could make her more their wheelhouse would be if she wasn't white or she was some manner of LGBT. Even their Olicity fans generally liked Laurel because of things like that. They also have an aversion to killing women, especially for the sake of male characters' pain (and, let's face it, Laurel is far from the first woman to die to make Oliver feel bad - in fact, there are only two left in his life that would have any meaning, and both of them have come within a hairsbreadth of death).

because Felicity isn't the better choice if Laurel is dead. They need Ollie to choose Felicity over Laurel to justify their feeling that Felicity is the best. Killing Laurel off just means Ollie is settling for her cause she's the only one left.

I will never understand why she got shat on for all this section of the show, the character really was going through a rough time and made all the worst decisions one could, I thought that added to the intensity of the arc.
Felicity was a good character in a in okay show who was given terrible story, writing, and lines.
First she's Lana tier in season, but it's okay, she's responsibly with Tommy and Oliver is the reason her sister is dead. The problem is she's given Lana Lang tier writing so she just comes off as a bitch because she's not in the know.
Then she's worse than that in season 2 because of alcoholism and slade fucking shit up. She has her arc and it's actually pretty good, but again the writing kills it and she comes off as an unintelligible character
Season 3 comes up and she picks up as a character. It's all good with her becoming black canary and picking up with Nyssa and it was good, but of course we had to waste our time with fucking olicity shipping when real shit was happening at the time
Seriously, Laurel was a good character, but the writing was what brought her down

I mean, she was actually a really fucking bad character, as she was just meant to be Rachel from Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. Laurel and Sara were a single actually good character, Dinah Drake, split into two giving each of them half as much personality as she would have had as a unified concept.

Because it was amazing and people won't forgive such a slide into shit. It ruined a number of people's favorite characters and went nowhere for two years. It's a guttural feeling of betrayal but also insult, especially as the show became obnoxious about how it treated Felicity.

Part of the problem Laurel had in the first two seasons was that she had to be the primary romantic drama generator for the sake of the narrative. In universe it made sense why she acted the way she did, it's just that the writers didn't know how to properly execute it.
Fuck I can't even remember what she did in season 1 other then be angry with Oliver, date Tommy, then fuck Oliver at the end of the season.

The show keeps derailing a decent superhero plot to focus on relationship drama... which could be fine if it was done well, but Arrow always does relationship drama in the exact same horrible way: everyone gets a bored, constipated look on their face, states their intentions with absolutely no attempt to understand any point of view but their own, and absolutely no development happens at all, except for some arbitrary, unrelated event spontaneously changing their mind.
It makes every single character unlikable, but Felicity most of all just because she's the only character on the whole show that is never ever called out on their bullshit. Oliver is called out by Diggle multiple times when he's being unreasonable. Oliver proves Diggle wrong as well. All of team Arrow berates Laurel for trying to do the exact same vigilante work that they're already doing themselves. But despite all common sense, Felicity gets more praise, love, and attention than any other character on the show, and is still passive aggressive about it.
