I think for what this story is going for for the first issue I would have had it from an outside perspective - like, one of the miners. Oh man, are you in agreement with that? I would love if Bendis could tap his own unique experiences in adopting and raising minority kids into a Miles book. But Bendis cannot write, and Miles' book is bad.

O yeah, Hawkman at his core is pretty simple, dude who flys around and beats the crap out of villains with a mace and other ancient weapons. But of course at this point "Hawkman has an absolutely convoluted insane history" is as iconic a part of the character as his core concept is. As far as I can tell, it's because "we can get away with it". Marvel hates leaving money on the table, and they really hate that new readers won't play ball with the market as its been established towards older readers.

I'd love for Miles to actually be interesting. For this to happen, either someone else needs to write him, or Bendis needs to drastically improve, which would probably start by dropping a shitload of his other books.
