Do you suppose that somewhere in the Marvel Multiverse there's an Earth where all the things that happened on these Timely Comics WWII covers happened? Where Namor, Jim Hammond, Captain America, Bucky, and others somehow also had the power to change their size and killed scores of Axis soldiers? Would the war end early? Would they just go off and change the course of other wars before fighting amongst themselves?

I think it's because other artists were over-exaggerating the original Everett design (which was only a little exaggerated). If you thought that was bad, you should've seen Gustav Schrotter's take on Namor in the late 40's here.
I can't remember when he started looking relatively normal again, maybe sometime during the late 40's after the Schrotter design.
