Not sure about the fanbase numbers. I mean how would you even calculate that? But it's ironic given fembots have been a thing since VERY early in Transformers history. That's real world, not in-universe. Funny how Hasbro was initially opposed for the early comics, then suddenly changed their minds in the cartoons. They've been a minority of visible Cybertronians, same as they've been in the toylines, but they have had representation in nearly every on-screen incarnation at one point or another, usually as a member of the main cast. One of the more recent exceptions, Animated, was originally going to have a female lead in Red Alert being their resident medical officer. And supposedly Arcee was going to join the cast if they'd gotten that fourth season.
Reminds me of the movies when they didn't want to include Arcee in the first one because they weren't sure how to deal with robot gender, then in the second she shows up without any gender discussion. Then she dies according to Michael Bay. Nice guy.

Furman had a death grip on the whole gender issue in the comics since day one. Nobody told him otherwise to change his mind on the whole gender thing. After he left Hasbro let the new writers do whatever they wanted.
The cartoon wasn't his to control so he had no say on the subject.

I have no idea why anyone feels like they have to explain the presence of female transformers. Again, most of them look and act like dudes, yet nobody questions this for some reason.

It's better when they don't try. They almost always cop out, like the Covenant of Primus had gender pronouns as just a little bit of deference to us fleshlings from Alpha Trion, the git. All we knew is females were fewer, and whatever biological difference exists was so ill defined by the writing as to be pretty much meaningless (which was probably for the best). Maybe - MAYBE - they are better at math or some shit. Some kind of conceptualization that Solus Prime had that allowed her to maximize use of her Forge. However she's the Roman Vulcan of the Thirteen, their God of the Forge, so of course she was awesome at building shit and being creative. How do the other females stand up to her? How do the males stand up to Prima or Nexus? The Thirteen were GODS (or at least demi-gods compared to Primus and Unicron), they were all larger than life.
