Azzarello wrote Batman Broken City, and the Wednesday Comics Batman. He also wrote Superman: For Tomorrow.
Byrne wrote The Many Deaths of the Batman, which was about someone killing all the mentors of Batman and dressing them up in a Batman costume. Also he worked on that Batman 3-D graphic novel.

It's mostly a pacing issue. I think it could be fixed if creators thought of it more like a mini rather than one full story. Often feels like they decompressed one issue more than anything else.

I feel the same way about them. Its weird. Floppies are already "written for trade". You would think OGNs would allow for tighter plotting and pacing. But it seems like decompression is having an adverse affect there as well.
