Despite not being a big fan of anything Cumberbatch is in, this is the reason I'm excited about him as Strange. He has the right overly dramatic presence that could make this work. Disney is good at finding actors that really embody the characters.

He reaches a better demo of 18-49 and replays the next day. NBC has Fallon, but a lot of people don't like Fallon. Kimmel plays to the college crowd while still bringing in the adults and teens. Colbert is either tied or behind Kimmel every night now.
So Disney uses the guy they have, WB saw how successful it was and used Kimmel as well for BvS promotion (kek), and it's now being followed by others.
I only watch Kimmel for the big cast episodes like AoU and GotG, but I get the appeal. He's Letterman before he got spiteful. He's Leno when Leno was the young temp fill-in for Carson for a week here or there. He's Conan after Andy but before Andy returned.

Honestly, I just really hope this movie nails the tone of classic Strange. I'm willing to forgive it a lot of trespasses if it can do that. To a lot of people (including many comic writers, who usually come from other fields) this movie is going to establish THE cultural perception of Doctor Strange, meaning many future runs on the comic will probably be influenced by it. So here's hoping they get the spirit right, and future Dr. Strange writers don't get some sort of warped idea of who the character is.
