What's up with artists writing books but not drawing them? It's so lame, it's like with Cloonan or JH Williams III(though he drew most of Batwoman).

>What's up with artists writing books but not drawing them? It's so lame, it's like with Cloonan or JH Williams III(though he drew most of Batwoman).
Cloonan has straight up said in podcast interviews that she had nearly burnt out on drawing comics. Writing is basically an outlet to try something different in the comics collaboration process to keep it fresh for her while she can focus on drawing her own personal works like that sequel to Wolves she keeps saying she'll finish.

I assume it's probably the same for Del Duca. Keatinge seems like the kind of dude to be encouraging and push his partners to try writing their own works if they haven't started something already anyways.

Vertigo is really not needed now that Image exists, maaan.
>inb4 MUH TALENT AND MUH 90'S

Vertigo was only good because they held one of the best contracts at the time when it came to claiming rights and everyone wanted a bit of that and Berger was a solid editor. Image is now the best when it comes to holding rights and Vertigo is neglected pretty fucking hard by DC.

I like Shelly Bond and what she's trying to do with Vertigo but WB and DC don't fucking care, man.
>>

Vertigo is still needed because it's good to have different labels/imprints. Besides Vertigo actually pays you to make the book, Image doesn't.

I mean what does it matter if you retain all the rights to your book if it sells like garbage and you can't pay your rent/mortgage?.
>>
>>81521455

I think Prince of Cats is a pretty good example of why you would want to keep your rights. It got one printing despite the demand for it and Wimberly couldn't do jack fucking shit to cash in on the audience that wanted a piece of it.

What part of "some people just want to make money" don't you get? besides, with vertigo you still own part of the damn thing and you'll still get money. In certain cases, couple of years after ti was published, the rights revert to the creative team completely and they're free to put out a trade for their comic at other publishers if they can.
>>
>>81521834

>What's up with artists writing books but not drawing them?

You can only draw maaaaybe 1 book a month. More likely 1 every six weeks.

Writing takes considerably less time, provides a creative outlet and income that doesn't burn the artist out or make their drawing suffer.

Plus, everything is about the writers these days. They get all the credit for doing everything, even though artists do a lion's share of the storytelling as well.

It’s been almost four years since Prince of Cats was originally printed at Vertigo and three years since it went out of print. Before I get into the why you’re bringing it back into print somewhere else part, what’s the story behind it going out of print to begin with? And did the rights to the book simply revert to you after being out of print for a while?

Wimberly: Honestly, I wish I knew why it went out of print the first time. I found out when I tried to buy some copies from Forbidden Planet. I feel like it hadn’t quite been a year yet. It was out of print but mostly sold out as well. I was frustrated by the amount of people asking me where they could get it or why they couldn’t find it.

>tfw I was one of them
>>
>>81530254

It is. That's the problem I have with most image books. They can get some top tier artists but there's no real creativity in the story ideas. It's like these guys realize they don't have to do capeshit and just shit their pants

I love damn near everything Remender wrote for Marvel and my dick would stay diamonds for a year if he hopped back on the cape train. Here are some bullshit image comics ideas off the top of my head that I wouldn't be surprised to see
>Twilight style vampires in Victorian England
>Undercover KGB operatives who are also prominent members of the 70s disco scene
>A hitman with a heart of gold
>A "sci-fi" comic that is basically black lives matter on a made up planet
>Alternative history where Nazis run Hollywood instead of jews
>"It's like 1 popular thing from the 80s meets another popular thing from the 80s"
>Jurassic Park reversed so the dinosaur scientists used human DNA to make a human theme park where everything goes wrong. Ends in Dino extinction

I could go on but I don't want all my TV show *cough* I mean comicbook ideas stolen

Hickman never finished up his SHIELD series over at Marvel. i have never forgiven him for that since i thought it was the most impressive series to be published by the big 2 at the time. i honestly don't think i've read a marvel comic since. well, other than Ellis's Moon Knight and Ennis's Fury War Gone By.

I can only imagine what the fuck Fantagraphics' library looks like to you then. None of this stuff seems hipster. It's just more of the usual sci fi, crime, and fantasy shlock that creators at Image like to pump out.

There's totally alt comix at Image but none of this stuff qualifies as it.

ah, i wouldn't know. it's been years and i gave up on it. kinda like Ellis, you can only be burned so many times before calling it quits on that writer. when it comes to their new works, i will always wait until it is collected or the story is over to even take a peek at it. unless it's Alan fucking Moore.

>PRINCE OF CATS written and drawn by Ron Wimberly, lettered by Jarred Fisher, and featuring design by Jorden Haley returns to print from Image Comics.

>PRINCE OF CATS was first released from Vertigo to critical acclaim in the summer 2012. It was out of print before the following summer. After three years, it will be returning to print through Image Comics.

>PRINCE OF CATS is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead meets The Warriorsmeets Sword of Doom. PRINCE OF CATS sets Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in an alt-universe, mid-eighties New York where dueling with live blades evolved as a cultural phenomenon alongside New York's other street cultures; it eschews the story of the titular star-crossed lovers to follow the tragic story of Tybalt, the Prince of Cats.

>PRINCE OF CATS, the definitive remastered author’s edition, is set to release in Fall 2016.
