This was absolutely wonderful. Superman's in great hands with Tomasi.

I'm not the type to storytime much, but I loved this so let's do it!

The thing I hate about this guy's art is that it looks like he's tracing over 3D models
>>
>>81505808
It's no where near as good as you're making it out to be. It's just set-up and thus mostly middling. Luckily we should be getting the next part next week as opposed to enxt month. If it was the latte my opinion on the issue would be even worse.

Like I said the issue is pretty middling. And I'm well aware how serialized story telling works, I've been reading comics for years. There's not honestly just not much substance to this issue. And I just don't care. It's not really a bad thing but that doesn't automatically make it a good thing. If I had to wait a month for the next part I just wouldn't care anymore by then. Because I only have to wait a week it's not as bad.

Superman #156, The Last Days of Superman.

You might have seen an iconic panel from the issue where Superman writes a parting message on the moon with this heat vision, "Do good to others and every man can be a Superman".

Yeah, but that's okay. The more you read (good stuff in particular) the more refined you're taste will become. I mean, when I first started reading comics bad art wouldn't phase me at all. I could read a dozen Liefeld issues in a sitting and not notice the bad art
>>
>>81506800
"It could be worse" is a dumb excuse when "it could be better" also exists. It makes everything look samey and lifeless. Not to mention action can't be represented well with still 3D models.

>Big plot twist was relationship gossip
>Superman is Doomsday who wants to kill everyone
>Red Lanterns plug in because he was writing Red Lanterns at the time. Sort of like X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy constantly meddling with each other like Bendis.

Compared to Tomasi
>Superman goes back home and chats to Smallville residents. They know he's Superman, but they still see him as Clark.
>Diana stops the villain while Clark saves the lives of everyone else. They trust each other to do the right thing.
>Clark is powerless, but Diana has his back, always. Anything he can't do, she picks up the slack.

The only great issue Soule did was the Swamp Thing one. Soule made it less like a relationship book involving two of the greatest superheroes ever and more like reading Superhero Gawker.

So is this how they're getting rid of nu52 supes and replacing him with pre-flashpoint boy scout?
>>
>>81519076
Superman standing up to shit cops, being a friend to the cheeldren, and being a symbol of hope and solidarity to the people? Fuck yeah.
>>
>>81518741
>>81519076
The best arcs of Pak's run were the ones without crossover shit, the underground arc and the Smallville one. The first arc of Truth in Action was good but it went downhill after Kuder got busy. The only notable Batman/Superman arc was the Superman's Joker one.
>>
>>81519193
>So is this how they're getting rid of nu52 supes and replacing him with pre-flashpoint boy scout?

If that isn't what they're doing it's clear that's what they want people to think.

I'm really torn here. I adore pre-Flashpoint Supes but I don't really want New 52 Superman to die either. I was kind of hoping for some sort of continuity merge.
>>
>>81511905
He's kind of right. Everything between Born to Kill and the Robin Rises arc was kind of mediocre with a few notable exceptions. And even Robin Rises had flaws that could be addressed.
>>
>>81518784
Yeah, I think he's fantastic for the role, to bad we rarely get good scenes with him. I enjoyed the Clark/Lois bath scene and his "you are my world" moment - there really should have been more of that.
>>
>>81519563
He might retire or something for a while, but I don't think he's dying. Jurgens yesterday that Clark Kent would still be running around which is what causes confusion.
>>
>>81518741
>And Truth was fucking stellar.
You serious nigga?
>>
>>81519289
>Superman standing up to shit cops
Until that dumb reveal which threw out all the social tone of the book for literally who cares catoon bogeyman. It was dogshit after that.
>>
>>81519698
But Clark Kent is a mystery, and the two Supermen will meet in this current arc. So, if the Clark Kent in that story were N52 Clark, it wouldn't be a mystery either to the readers or the Supermen, only the public in general.
>>
>>81505347
I love superman, but I havnt been able to read much of his new 52 shit because it's shit. Can I hop on this issue without reading much of the story before this?
>>
>>81520086
The way he stated it yesterday, the mystery is specifically about the general public trying to understand how Superman and Clark Kent can both be around if they're the same guy rather than a reader mystery. I suppose it's debatable though.

>When the book starts off, Lex Luthor has pretty much proclaimed himself the Superman of Metropolis. Well, our Superman knows Luthor’s history on his own world and will never trust him or buy into the idea of him as a hero. Meanwhile, someone has found and released Doomsday on the city, and it’s all complicated by the fact that Clark Kent is very obviously running around in Metropolis. The whole world has learned that Clark and Superman are one and the same, but suddenly they seem to be two separate people, so that can no longer be the case. We start to really build this entire mystery of “Who is Clark Kent?” while at the same time bringing plenty of the “action” the title promises as you only can with Doomsday.

>>81520228
Yeah it's the beginning of a new arc and they recap things here a little too
>>
>>81520228
I would say so. There are a few references to things that have happened but nothing that would leave you lost.

Yeah, but, yano, comics. It still had it's societal impact.
>>
>>81520228
It's not though. Haven't you been reading this thread? Try reading Morrison, Johns', or Pak's run. Or even the inoffensive Jurgens/Diggle/Giffen stuff. The only really really bad run was Lobdell's.
>>
>>81520646
hyperbole is a meme, /co/ seems to rank anything not historically great as shit
>>
>>81520646
I think Morrison and Pak's runs are supremely overrated, but Geoff Johns's Superman run is worth the read for sure.

Also read the digital-first Adventures of Superman series if you haven't. It's an anthology series so the quality is somewhat mixed, but when it's good it's really fucking good.
>>
>>81520228
Yes.
>>
>>81520646
>>81520769
Yeah, I was okay with Johns, but this first issue of Tomasi is already better than what I got from Pak and Morrison. But tastes differ, etc, etc.
>>
>>81520769
The short Johns run is ruined by JRJR's art and the Ulysses heel-turn was kind of not impressive even though you knew it was coming. It wasn't bad of course, but you could tell it was the opening arc for a run that didn't get to be written. I don't know if I would recommend it on its own at least as a great thing. That depowered issue was a nice note to leave on though.
>>
>>81520591
Mr. Pak I really wanted to say this for a long time, you're fucking hack, your Superman was literal definition of textbook average and I hope every cunt fun of yours who referred to your dogshit as Paktion dies.
>>
>>81520769
Pak is definitely overrated.
>>
>>81520646
Morrisons was good, but I couldn't get into pak's, johns, or Lobdell's. I read some adventures of superman and those were decent, but I prefer a story as opposed to episodic issues.
>>
>>81520260
Cool. I'm gonna pick it up. Looks pretty good
>>
>>81520858
>>81520769

You guys crazy? The 18 issues from Morrison's run is the best stuff from a mainline Superman book since Johns' Pre New 52 run. Morrison's run is maybe my favorite mainline Superman book period. I wish he was on a little longer and did another arc or two.
>>
>>81520933
Yeah, sure, but it was neat. I think the Johns/JRJR book would make a good animated adaption.
>>81521088
lol, you mad.
>>
>>81521200
>best stuff from a mainline Superman book since Johns' Pre New 52 run

It was good but that's not saying much there. The only competitor in that era is Busiek's run.
>>
What should I read of new52 supes? I,assume the early Morrison Action Comics is at,worst okay.
>>
>>81521296
Busiek was very average with frequent high beats.
>>
>>81521380
If you like Morrison, you'll like it. Art at times is complete dogshit.
>>
>>81521443
It was still better than most of what else published. Maybe if you include non-Clark stuff like Gates Supergirl, Cornell Luthor, and Lemire Superboy. Kind of hard to judge Roberson's short run I guess.
>>
>>81505347
How was no-powers Sups and should I read this as a backstory for rebirth even with pre-flashpoint sups going in?
>>
>>81521604
>How was no-powers Sups

Had some good parts but I don't know if it's worth going back to read unless you're particularly interested in it

>should I read this as a backstory for rebirth even with pre-flashpoint sups going in?

Rebirth itself will likely catch you up on things anyway so you don't have to unless you want to read about what seems to be Superman putting together his own version of Batman Inc
>>
>>81521563
Yeah but in comparison Johns was better. At least he tried stuff, Busiek played very safe and sound. Although that might've been because editorial reigning him too much.
>>
>>81521719
Wasn't he doing Trinity at the same time? Might have been overworked too.

Yeah it's pretty distracting, like reading something with Amanda Conner's art outside of Power Girl.
>>
>>81520260
>The way he stated it
Doesn't matter. Don't take Jurgens pre-release info seriously. Because of it folks were convinced that Batman Beyond was going to be McGinnis even though everything else pointed towards it being Drake.
>>
>>81524205
If he's lying then he's lying but that's different than suggesting some third Clark Kent is going to be in the story while the new 52 one is dead and the pre-Flashpoint one is Superman. People made that up out of nothing.
>>
>>81524287
>People made that up out of nothing.
No they didn't. It's a logical conclusion considering Jurgens doesn't actually say it's new 52 superman. He just keeps reffering to him as "Clark Kent" and since he says Clark Kent's identity is a "mystery" (whether that be for the readers or fictional public) it makes sense that people might think there's a third running around.
>>
>>81524011
>2016
>still complaining about sameface when all but two artists ever have it
>>
>>81524406
That interpretation just always seemed like a stretch to me and mostly given after the fact to justify the lack of a Rebirth design for New 52 Superman. I guess it's just different people interpreting the same thing vastly differently if you think it made sense and I can't see where you're coming from. From the start of things at the Rebirth panel it seemed obvious he was talking about in-universe mystery given that he phrased it as the conundrum in the identity reveal being part of why Luthor rises up to take control.
>>
>>81506464
Super-Man Prime
>>
>>81505948
I had just finished reading All-Star for the first time yesterday which had the theme of Superman kicking the bucket. Wasn't expecting the next issue I would pick up on Super-man to also feature him dying.
>>
>>81524854
It's not that I think that, it's that it makes sense some people think that. You seem to be stuck on your interpretation and can't seem to understand why others would think differently. I think it could go either way and both options make sense. And I don't think they'll actually kill of New52 Superman.
>>
>>81506460
>Janin

>>
>>81520260
>The way he stated it yesterday, the mystery is specifically about the general public trying to understand how Superman and Clark Kent can both be around if they're the same guy rather than a reader mystery.

This part makes it looks like he's talking about a mystery to the readers, not to the in-universe public
>We start to really build this entire mystery of “Who is Clark Kent?” while at the same time bringing plenty of the “action” the title promises as you only can with Doomsday.
That part will be the "mystery" of the title, while Doomsday will be the "action".

Grant Morrison, Greg Pak, Scott Snyder, Geoff Johns, and this issue.

Because of shitty fans screaming "RED TRUNX" for 5 years, really. Doomed sucked, but Truth was a great arc, dip.
>>
>>81539394
Don't act like post crisis Superman would become the star if sales weren't dogshit because of Truth. Seriously, Truth literally crumbled the sales of the title and DC got excuse to off new 52 Superman. And they were actually hinting towards depowering pre fp Superman in Lois and Clark when it started.
>>
>>81539752
Look at the sales pre Truth and after it started nigga. They went to shit. And truth was shit. Managed to be boring and butchered my favorite character.
