He wasn't really a Gary Stu. His "moral infallibility" is portrayed to contrast against Batman or Superman, who've come up against their moral codes from time to time. Captain Marvel's been really close to the Golden Age for 70 of the 76 years he's been around and that isn't really a bad thing.
I think DC should offer the classic Captain Marvel, or the New 52 Shazam to fans of both. However, if it came to an ultimatum I think most people would choose classic, since it's like if they made the Tec 27 Batman the basis for their movie. Curse of Shazam, while a neat little story, is really different from how they usually portray the character, and to adapt it for the movie would be cheesing.
