That's the thing, the original was risky and original, it had some pretty biting satire and was definitely surprisingly violent at times. It also tended not to go for cheap gross-out or scatological humor that was common at the time and it generally came across as an intelligent show. I'd argue that much of it appeals to a more modern, 'adult' sensibility than many other kids' cartoons of the time period in its pacing and delivery (part of why it was extremely popular among all ages for a time) and as a result I would perhaps argue that it might hold up the best of any Cartoon Cartoon.
They're rebooting it because they want to give the network more prominent female characters without taking a risk. The whole thing is pretty crassly commercial. If they really wanted to make money on this show again, they should have just commissioned a new HD remaster from the film elements and did reruns. The show had a a good run, there's no need for this commercialized garbage.

Thing is, they're mostly talk from what I've seen.
Blossom and Bubbles are more characatured than ever actually. Buttercup seems to be getting more range this time, but that may have just been because we started with more Buttercup focused episodes.
But going further: no, it really doesn't need story. The original didn't. They had 1 single, well thought out plot per episode. But these new ones seem like they can't decide what they want to do.

It's got a few story beats, but they all tie directly to each other and things aren't bounced around.

The original had A-B plot formula in some episodes, just not all of them.
But the new thing went way further than that. They jumped between plots and dropped ideas really quickly and pointlessly rather than having one coherent thought throughout it.
It was more like A, B and C are all happening at once instead of A & B weaving in and out or, as most of the episodes actually went now that I'm thinking about it, A leading into B.

Honestly, I don't get why having lines that aren't one continuous width has gone outta style.
I dig lines of varying thickness. They are the shit.
Not much cringe worthy happens outside of the first episode, but it's not good either. It's a show with no voice of it's own. It's just miming everything around it. Powerpuff Girls rough premise, Teen Titans Go style gags, art that looks like a blend of 3 other shows, and a mixed bag of character traits all poured into a stew without much logic making up the 3 girls.
And all of these things come and go with no consistency. Sometimes they try to live up to the old show with the narrator and the "once again the day is saved" but sometimes you won't even see a single recognizable face among the secondary characters, lacking even the professor and the mayor. Sometimes it goes for the TTGO style, sometimes it goes for Adventure Time style. Sometimes it goes for fleshing out the characters, often times it just flandarizes them to even further extremes then their original "built to be easy to understand" original selves.
In all this lack of consistency though, one thing has remained consistent among all the episodes I watched. Nothing of quality is found here. I can find the humor in TTGO from time to time. It's all just cheap knockoffs of everything here. There's not even juvenile laughs here. Just dry nothing.

Doesn't really seem like they"going for" anything, so to speak. No structure or ideas, style, or vision. Just a hodgepodge of writers and such throwing stuff in a pot. It's not super offensive, but it has very little going for it. Other than the name; and I feel like they're banking too much on that.
It's also very shy at being too different from the original. But it's not exactly a sequel or continuation, either. So it's in this weird "dipping your foot in the pool" middle ground. S'weird.
I think my biggest gripe is the lack of action.
But, action toons are no longer a hot commodity, so I am not surprised. Forgive for taking a shot at a low hanging fruit, but, I don't think this team is equipped well enough to handle those kind of scenes anyway.
BUT, since the talent seems to be potentially big and amorphous, maybe we'll see some visually fresh stuff in the future. I'm optimistic that they'll find a reason to justify bringing it back.other than money

At least they were acting like girls instead of stereotypical teenagers. Kids making mistakes, oh no, how evil! It's more believable than suddenly the girls became boy obsessed in the first episode.
I know it was hinted at in the original series, but basing the first episode on it after being a show where the girls were focused on just caring for each other. I'm glad it was only one episode. It really was a shocking disappointment for the remake of a series that went against tired stereotypes of how girls act. I guess the writer for that episode just weren't familiar with the first series, or just lazy.
It's nice to see the girls acting like girls. Perhaps this show has a chance of not being the same as Equestria Girls vs MLP:FiM.

Just saw the first episode and it reeks of SJW nonsense. Like, the villain for the first episode was a total SJW interpretation of what manly men are. And that's bad for some reason?
