Does King of the Hill have the most dry, subtle sense of humor out of any Western adult animated show? Almost every adult cartoon has an over-the-top style of comedy, often for shock value, but King of the Hill has a much more subdued sense of humor.

Yuorofag here, I've marathoned this series few years ago and I enjoyed it a lot.

As far I've asked, this show is supposed to present actual state of mind in south america. Is that true?

It's very much about texas specifically. Suburban Texas is a whole different animal then say Georgia.

at certain points, the show definitely expresses a southern state of mind through hank, but there are some episodes that go into full-on parody of the south, especially in the earlier seasons

Fucking thank you. This meme unfortunately isn't as widespread as with other shows.

King of the Hill peaked in season 4, and then repeaked in 7-8 (5 was kind of shitty although had some 4-tier episodes, 6 was just weird... trying to be something that it wasn't).

Then 9 and 10... they were ok I guess.

11-13 might as well not even be the same show. The tone shifted so dramatically, and they kept making all these status-quo changing episodes cause they had no real ideas of their own.

They did a lot of damage to the brand in the last 3 seasons, and unfortunately a bunch of filthy casual plebs who never bothered watching it until it was on le dult swim don't realize that those last 3 years (and season 6 to a much lesser degree and for different reasons) shouldn't be considered canon.

>the 4,000th "Bobby and Hank find common grounds" episode

Come to think of it, has Hank ever been shown to know a lot about beef like he did in the finale? Preferring medium rare doesn't count, anyone who knows a pair of grill tongs from their own dick knows that medium rare is God tier.

Showing Boomhauer's job was stupid, as was giving him a name. I don't consider that or anything they did in the final 3 seasons canon.

>>81487345
Give me a few examples, I'm drawing a blank. I know he knows his way around a cow sometimes but I can't remember any time he shown to have a fucking encyclopedic knowledge on beef aside from the finale.
>>
KotH was okay. Some inconsistent writing, though. Peggy grew up in three different parts of Montana with two or three different kinds of mother.
>>
>>81487459
Nothing like KOTH. The Goode family sucked dick, and was a shitty show designed to make fun of liberals. I say as a conservative, designing a whole show around making fun of an ideology is a bad idea (see: American Dad).

KOTH at first had slight jabs at conservative values, but they did away with that type of thing pretty early on. And even though it sucked at first there was always more to it than "see how dinosaur these texans are" which like I said, they got rid of relatively early.

>>
>>81487790
The whole "peggy hates her mom" thing started in 6, which had new showrunners behind it who didn't seem to care about contradicting earlier seasons (I mean contradicting 1 and even 2 isn't always a bad thing in my mind but 3 and 4 is).

Then they were fired and 7-8 were based af.

Then 9 and 10 were kind of mediocre and they of course revitalized that peggy thing mentioned in season 6.
>>
>>81487823
nah i won't but like i said here >>81487787
I probably don't disagree with you. I just didn't remember the finale that well and didn't remember him having an encyclopedic knowledge of beef in it, so I misunderstood your comment and thought you were saying he was a beef pleb all around (which idk maybe you are and i'll try to dispute that cause he's definitely not a beef pleb, just not a super-autist savant either).

NY. used to watch it. its a good show. It doesnt try to be a sitcom. it isnt a sitcom. it has humor, but it also has drama some times and deals with suburban life issues.

its unique for an adult cartoon in the US, when the standard bearers are Simpsons and Family Guy. (although simpsons itself started out as satire and devolved into meaningless sitcom)

>>
>>81489347
Episodes like Little Horrors of Shop, Bill Are Made To Be Broken and A Beer Can Named Desire are on a higher level than anything in 3.

3 still had a little bit of the old spirit of the show, and 4 is where the Hank character came most full into his own. You saw a lot of it forming in 3 but 4 is where it peaked.

I mean then 5 lost some of all this besides a few select episodes, and 6 was just weird.

7-8 were a bit different from 4 but God-tier in their own respects.

3 is certainly good but 4 is undoubtedly better.

3 has more of the meme episodes though, so I guess I could see why viewers who are a little less mature gravitate toward those (A Firefighter We Will go in particular, which is a good episode, but KOTH was on the top of its game with the more low-key episodes of 4, 7 and 8 (I mean by vibe not necessarily by plot).
>>
>>81489552
Nah I don't like it for the "meme episodes."

I think the continuity was stronger with shit like Luanne's hair growing back and Peggy and Hank trying to have another kid, which after the skydiving two-parter never really came up again (and both parts of that were produced during season 3 anyway).

The show felt most like it was developing its own world in 3 where actions and events of characters would be referenced again in the same season, but then with 4 it went back to being more like 1/2 where it was more of a (good, don't get me wrong) sitcom, with most episodes not having real connections to the others outside of the status-quo-changing ones. Like, Bobby's one-episode "girlfriend" and him being hurt by her not being into him was brought up by Bill in his suicide episode when he was trying to bring everyone else down, and Connie and Bobby's dance from one episode winds up in the yearbook in another.

I dunno, I just like low-key continuity shit like that and I don't remember it occurring much in any other season. 4 really is good though; I just think 3 is amazing.

>>81489789
I definitely remember thinking that shit was cool in 3.

But that's not the BEST part of the show. The best part of the show is the individual plots, which are not really sitcomy in rhythm/spirit/etc.

But ok in 4 there is a little continuity. Peggy's airplane crash, after the initial shock of the first 2 episodes, continues to get referenced off-hand. Peggy wins her third substitute teacher of the year award, after it being mentioned in 3 that she had 2 and after she beat Dooly that she was worried there wouldn't be a third.

Luann mentions her professor trying to fuck her, there's shit with bobby/connie.

Peggy's computer changes if you follow the production order and not the airdate order after hank buys her a new one.

Dale apologizes for his y2k over reaction in a later episode that season.

There's the 2 part murder episode, although it's hardly low key.

Luann moves out. That's referenced in the season and also in later seasons.

Nancy breaks up with redcorn, but again, hardly low key.

so yeah.
>>
>>81490195
Yeah, but those are more of references to the status-quo altering stuff that naturally has to come up again, than to the smaller events that didn't NEED to be referenced again but were still taken into consideration by the writers, outside of maybe the Y2K stuff.

Peggy's substitute teacher award was mentioned a few times in the seasons before that instead of just once so it wasn't surprising they made an episode of it, I think the murder 2-parter was self-contained in those episodes (obviously Debbie stays dead but she was barely a character before that), and I don't think Luanne's professor was ever mentioned before or since, that's just a "yeah, she's in college" reference so again... status quo. Not claiming I watch it for the continuity or that the show stayed stagnant in 4, just that I felt it played with the world of the show and the timeline of events in a more interesting way at the time. Peggy's airplane fall and physical therapy, which should be a huge fucking thing, had one episode devoted to her recovery and maybe two offhand references later, then might as well have been forgotten. But with Luanne they went out of their way to show her hair growing back realistically by production order (same with Didi's pregnancy), and it just felt like they were working off a larger plan.

I guess beyond that it just comes down to personal preference though re: episode quality, and while at least half of 3 is easily among my favorites of the whole series there are maybe only 5 episodes I think are as good from 4.
>>
>>81486922
The problem with later seasons of KotH is that they became more like earlier seasons of The Simpsons. They weren't bad, but the plot reached a level of outlandishness that wasn't there before. KotH was best with grounded humor. Less so with the guys hunting a giant snake in the sewers.
>>
>>81487706
It's the opposite now. Look at Adult Swim. 90% of it is McFarlane reruns and they stopped airing stuff like Home Movies. The only original programming they seem to want to greenlight are gorey edge tests like Mr. Pickles.
