Since I came to Japan most of the whale I see for sale seems to be imported from Iceland. Not that there is much of it on supermarkets anyway and it shouldn't be a problem for non-endangered species.
As I mentioned many countries hunt and consume whale. The reason some groups mention some and not others is purely political. They also tend to group all whales like if they were a single thing while there are many different species in different conditions.
Basically it is like banning the consume of horse because some zebras are endangered.

Honestly, I don't really think any show on the air is morally regressive. At best they might be conservative and if only because there are many morals that should be conservative.
Honesty, compassion, forgiveness, learning to face the future despite it's hardships. Those are important morals humanity doesn't just need to know but learn to apply more to their daily lives.
It's a message though always broadcast, but sadly not always received.

Japan is researching. They are researching on ways to hunt whales while maintaining a healthy population so they can keep hunting them. Just like many other countries that also hunt them and also want to keep hunting.
If they can keep hunting in a sustainable manner them the preservation of whales will be much safer as there will be an economic reason to keep them healthy and plentiful.

Restriction is not the same as ban, and even tiny countries with less than 50 000 inhabitants hunting around 800 whales yearly. And the research is exactly about hunting them, not about how their brain works or something like that, maybe some university might take advantage of that to study their brains or something else too but the main concern is with sustainable hunting something that I think could be done. Not that it matters much as it isn't a very popular meat and its popularity is decreasing but I don't think it should be eliminated as a possible source of food. What they seems to be trying to promote is deer meat as they are becoming very abundant.

I'm pretty sure that whale meat is a minor part of their diet and not a staple. In Japan for example the consumption is just a few grams per capita yearly so most of the whale meat remains frozen.
