Thoughts on Japan's love letter to Western cape comics?
>>
>>81471578
Better than most cape
>>
>>81471578
1st episode was fun
Disappointed to hear he gains super strength(albeit with no durability)
>>
>>81471578
I'm glad it got an anime, it will increase its popularity.

>>81471619
It was either that or have the kid be a penniless Batman competing with super-powered monsters. It's for the best, plus the fact that the power is given to him and he has to work really hard makes him interesting and gives development.
>>
>>81471578
I want to fuck that frog.

>>81471619
Mangafag here, even right up until the current chapters he's still a more cerebral hero than your usual brawlers. The author gave him a super power, but he's still putting the work in and forcing him to think and put his non-quirk talents to good use.
>>
>>81471578
I got #1 in my reading pile.
Haven't got to it yet.

Dropped.

I haven't watched the anime but the manga is one of the first shounen I've genuinely enjoyed in ages I could almost pitch it as X-Men done right given how badly the X-books are treated these days.

The designs are great, the characters are great and while the plot beats can be a little hackneyed the dude has an amazing ability to make a fight or action scene MATTER. Usually any combat or action scene in these series will work as a major character-building moment at the same time, which is something missing from so much of both Western comics and manga in the cape/hero genre.

Pretty good. Still shonen, but at least it knows that and still has fun with it.

Crossover when
>>

The endgame of his power would involve super-durability and super-speed as well, but at the moment exercising his power fully is something his body can't handle.
>>

What's wrong with a high school for heroes?
>>
>>81471722
It's better than you expect. Just try the first few chapters and see if you like it.
>>
Frog is best girl.
>>
>>81471578

nothing about this looks Western to be honest, family
>>
>>81471722
It a anime anon, if its going to be set somewhere. It got to be High School.
>>
I read couple of the first chapters of the manga once and it was pretty boring and the art didn't really do much for me.
>>
>>81471767
Did you get to the part where Deku actually joins the school?

The author's a big westaboo. He went to the screening of The Force Awakens in full Kylo Ren armor.
>>
>>81471767
If you ever give it another shot I would say the chapter Todoroki Shouto: the Origin (which I think is about chapter 40 or so) is the point at which you will know 100% whether the series will ever be for you or not.

That's a fairly big commitment to read if you're not into it though, I know.

I'm sure its great, but I just cannot do ANOTHER fucking high school centred manga/anime.

This coming from a comic fan, so I can see why it sounds hypocritical, but why the fuck do the japs have to follow the most formulaic, trope-character bland shit show crap for literally ever manga ever?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibPCLMH1NM4&feature=youtu.be
>>
>>81471810
If you removed every single manga with a high school setting, manga would still be about a thousand times more diverse than Western - at least American - publishing.

This manga is not really "the most formulaic, trope-character bland shit show crap" as you put it either.

Didn't he blow off a dead line to do that?
>>
>>81471810
It's because in Japan, high school is literally the last time most of them ever feel happiness. They have no reference point for having free time and friends who aren't coworkers, or getting to honestly express their feelings. And this is in a society where high school lasts 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Work is worse.
>>
I like that the character even says that their powers are like out of a comic (as in he says komikusu and not manga, even though it can be used to describe non-japanese comics)
>>
>>81471869
actually it's set in high school because shounen comics are for kids
>>
>>81471841
no, but it is the type that gets rammed down everyone's throats, even if you dont watch the stuff. i.e. most popular, therefore representative of the media

It's the big two vs most other companies all over again.

>>81471869
well now I just feel bad
>>
>>81471885
>Kids

>In Japan

I'm sure all five of them are very fond of it.
>>
>>81471810
Japanese society tends to idealize high school even more than we do because the salaryman lifestyle is almost literally soul-sucking, so they see it as the perfect period where they're almost adults yet still free.
Also, teens are the target demographic.
>>
>>81471885
oh wow. I just realized why it's so popular in the west.

It's the exact same fucking thing with my little pony.

Meant for kids, religiously worshipped by overweight faggots in their mothers basement.
>>
>>81471869
When I think about it, the only shows I can think of that are set after highschool in the real world are either about people with cool jobs, and the entire show is about their job, or people who are failures at life.
>>
>>81471915
Wait, do you mean in Japan? Because the dull workplace comedy is practically a genre in the west.

>>>>>>>/a/
post it there and stop being a special snowflake here
>>
>>81471911
Your reasoning doesn't follow, or every kid's show ever would be worshipped by basement dwellers.
>>
>>81471928
I mean anime.

I can't think of a single workplace SOL that is actually about the job.
>>
>>81471666
The author was originally going to have Deku try and be a superhero with superpowers, but his editor convinced him not to. The lengths they would have to go to in order to make a muggle like Deku useful would have been absurd.
>>
>>81471947
That's true though just look at any cartoon thread

>>
>>81471949
It's sad too because from what I've seen the japanese workplace is kinda hilarious if you forget that it's destroying their society.

The dirty secret of the japanese work ethic is that it isn't real. Japanese workers are less productive than american workers who put in fewer total hours; the bulk of that long workday is spent doing fuck all. It's overtime for it's own sake, meant more to demonstrate your dedication than to actually get anything done, and ambitious employees don't work harder to do their job better, they just jockey for position more in the hopes of getting to the top so they can do even less work.

It's a manga/anime based on /co/ superheroes. Having a thread every so often isn't a big deal. People on /co/ have different opinions to those of /a/, so a discussion about it here will be different to one there.

>>
>>81472023
Keep in mind that I don't have much experience with the japanese workforce myself, I've only been there once for a few weeks for my old job and things might have changed by now; but somehow I doubt it. This may be more true or less true for certain jobs or companies than others too.

I don't even mean to insult them; I can certainly understand why they behave this way, it's the only way to stay afloat in the workplace culture that they created. It would be funny as a show, but I don't mean to be mean spirited about it. The best comedy grows out of tragedy after all, and what Japan is doing to the Japanese is tragic.

Inspired by would be the better way to put it.

But it is a very honest take on capeshit, a lot like OPM, only as a shonen for kids rather than a comedic parody (what little difference there is there).

It's kinda like if the hero registration shit had went through, but instead of getting put under the military, they govern themselves mostly and train future heroes to follow suit and fight for justice and all that jazz.
But they're still spandex wearing, villain fighting, capeshit heroes when you get down to it.
>>
>>81471578
I've been reading it since the beginning, it's better than almost anything the west has shat out in the last 10+ years
>>
I'm not sure I understand the Villain Alliance's motivations. At first I thought they just wanted to get rid of All-Might and other heroes so they could have free reign to commit crimes. But now it seems they have some weird philosphical/moral reasons for wanting to get rid of the "Hero Society", like they actually think heroes are bad (and they're not the same motivations as Stain, whom I can at least understand).

Formulas are comfy as fuck. Familiar, easy to get into, needs very little set up... It also becomes super easy to see if something is entirely generic or not, because you need a good central gimmick to make it interesting.
>>
>>81472119
Shigaraki has sort of evolved his thoughts on the matter a bit more. He still wants All Might dead, as he thinks he represents everything wrong with the entire hero system and society at large. He also dislikes that society puts restraints on powers held by just about everyone, and criminalizes their use except when acting as paid mercenaries of the state, to subdue said criminalized users.

Last but not least, he is an autistic manchild, and a sociopath.
>>
>>81472155
