Brian Michael Bendis and Geoff Johns. Ten years ago both were at the top of their game as young upcoming writers. They both have popularly acclaimed titles and reviled stinkers under their belt. So what happened? Why is Johns largely beloved on /co/ while Bendis is held in contempt? What went horribly wrong for Bendis, or wonderfully right for Johns?

This, Johns is just plain more likeable. Based on his treatment of Wonder Woman and the New Gods he also seems willing to learn from his past mistakes, unlike Bendis.

Johns shows a respect for history and continuity. And he knows how to give each character their own voice. Conversely, Bendis doesn't give a fuck about anything and writes every character in his own jewish voice.
Could be that Johns is just a better writer, than Bendis perhaps? Bendis is the reason why i don't buy Marvel's comics anymore.

Johns, while traveling in largely the same literary styles, has mostly honed his game, not just embracing his general style of writing, but getting better at it. What's more, he's open to changing and improving to begin with, probably shown best by the personality 180 his Wonder Woman did over the course of his Justice League.
Bendis' style also kept the same, and... never improved his skills in that style. Got worse, even, stretched across multiple books and events, and with Marvel editorial doing little to puncture his ego and offer him meaningful crit, just keeps getting worse at hiding or putting away his flaws. An ego that says he doesn't need to get any better, multiple book assignments, yadda yadda yadda, the problems in previous books that might've flown under your nose are now in the bright glaring light of day, and you can't ignore them. People harp on Bendis dialog, but people'd excuse that in a heartbeat if the rest of the story was enjoyable. But decompression that does nothing, undeveloped characters, plots that go nowhere and then end witdh anticlimaxes, forgetting his own plots, and the ever present "no one's characterization exists but bendis'", and it's just not getting any better. His X-Men end runs with Scott saying he intentionally didn't do anything, for christ's sake.
Everything you liked about earlier Bendis is now spread too thin to be meaningful, or just got so much worse to suck outright.
Also, when interacting with fans, Johns is just generally much more amicable and charming. Bendis a dick and way wrapped up in himself. That changes audience perception.
