At what point should I ease off of pixelovely figures on to more complex stuff?

I've already made a few okay drawings, but I'm trying to review figures and make them more natural. I don't really know the point when I should switch just figures to more complex drawings.

I've been doing a lot more requests recently which I think is pretty good practice. For the most part, I've been focusing on coloring and shading more than usual. What can I do to improve something like this?

Okay, I know I'm not very good with colors but how can I improve on that. Also there might be some anatomy hiccups.
>>
>>81421409

Learn anatomy before colors senpai.
>>
>>81420602
I use Clip Studio Paint, which has an option to creating something called "perlin noise," which I tune until it creates a passable texture which I then set to "overlay" in the blending modes.

>>81421409
The fewer major colors at play, the better. Lapis is completely shades of blue, so you should use colors that complement or other make it stand out.

https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

That is a useful tool for learning how to go about picking visually appealing colors combinations.

I'm super anal about lines and stuff. My sketch lines are usually really dirty and then from there I'm not too sure what to do. I usually just make inked lines with max stabilization but I'm not happy with those either. How do I reach a middle ground? How do you personally ink?

Also my pen question if anyone could help>>81420367
>>
>>81423355
Okay, so in most of the stuff I've been doing recently, I've been cutting corners by creating the rough and then erasing the most of the garbage around the lines. Use a large canvas and a thin brush for the best effect, many do their sketches with larger brushes that can make things difficult later on.

As for when I actually ink something, I use vector lines. Vector lines can be directly manipulated in position and width, and generally allows for more control. Also, when it comes to inking, the "undo" button is your best friend- draw a line you don't like? Control-z. Keep it fast for smoother lines, and keeps remaking the line until you get it exactly how you want it.

Stabilization can only do so much for you- lines look the best when drawn quickly, using your shoulder and elbow to move the pen instead of your wrist.
>>
>>81423910

Vectoring? Like using gimp?

What about shading? I mean the light part about shading, that light thats white and shining off, how does that work? I feel like I do regular shading just fine but I'm not sure how to do lighter areas like you do.

>>
>>81424145
"Vector" or otherwise controllable lines are available in Clip Studio as a layer mode and Photoshop using the pen tool. I'm not sure about Gimp, but I'd be shocked if it didn't have something comparable.

As for the highlights, keep i mind that I'm overusing them. They are used to imply a glossy or wet surface, which I think is more appealing for lewd art, and doesn't work so well otherwise.
As for actually creating them, it's pretty straightforward. They should be created near the side of a form that facing towards the light source.
The only shapes you ever really have to create out of these highlights are dots and exclamation points, which can curve. There's also a bit of trial and error involved- I'll add them in and then remove or re-position the ones that look off.

Okay, this looks super familiar. Have you posted something similar in an old thread months back?

The main thing that needs work is shadow placement. The shading on the forearms seems too dark and out of place, and the shading on the cakes makes the face seem far too narrow.

Otherwise, you've got some really nice construction - I'm digging the musculature on the neck and collarbone.

ah, new age simplistic Cel shading

Cel shading: "Cel shading (often misspelled as "cell shading") or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3-D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades."

eh, people online and irl tell me they like when i do it all the time and its how i should shade

BUUUUUUUT, i really like doing sophisticated smudge brush painted style of shading. like how stjepan sejic does it

BUUUUUUUT, i do want my art to be liked and not hated on like it is 98% of the time so i should probably invest on perfecting the simplistic cel shading that even a dead monkey can do blind folded because thats whats popular and what everyone likes so fuck it, its how i will shade from now on, you convinced me anon

i mean, do you like cel shading because thats how anime does it and whats popular, because i make american art, not japanese art, i dont ever want to draw anime and manga garbage, i just want to draw american cartoons and comics ya know?

so do you honestly think it looks better than the painted realistic looking shading??????? or are just saying that because you like /a/ shit?????

serious question
>>
>>81441221
I'm saying it because you're "painted" shading isn't there yet.

I'm saying to use cel shading because it works.

>>81419261
You shouldn't "switch". Figure drawing is important all the time. You should just practice other stuff in addition to figure drawing.

There is no point when you stop training, you keep improving every day in your life.
>>
>>81441221
>>81441115
Yeah, cel shading is very good way to learn HOW to do shading - you can focus much more simply on learning how light and shadow work on 3D objects. Painting is for when you will have some decent expertise.

what >>81461900 kinda said. Create new layer, do the selection bs, fill in with bucket tool, and then create a clipping layer of the color layer set to whatever shading you're looking for (multiply, lumin, etc.), and work off that. IT looks worse colored right now, mostly because your colors look kinda flat on the torso, arm, and head. You can actually kinda see this with the black and white images. If you want to make the colors better, try adding more of a contrast with the light and dark portions. Make the covered part of the green shirt kinda mossy, and the lit portions a bit lime ig. A few more notes: your anatomy looks pretty aight as far as I can tell, but that arm seems a bit short. The face could use a bit of work but I think you'll get better at that as you do a bit more anatomy. I like it though, anon.

Here's my uncolored shit so far. I think this is the right file.

np. Also you might wanna try a more heavier version of shading, basically cell shading. Seen in comic books, cartoons and the like. It gives a bit more of a dramatic look and works very well with superhero or superpower stuff.

looks really good anon. Style ain't even THAT important to find, it'll kinda come on its own or your art will be recognizable for other reasons. If anything, it means you can be adaptable.

Alright, I'm going to actually try to post something before it's done so I can make changes. I'm taking a request for some THICK Korra.

What needs to be done here, besides finishing it?

Cool, I actually have that but I'm still using Sai while I have a few projects that I've started on it going. I'm weird like that.

I much prefer CS. You sure there's nothing of note? You don't need to be good at something to find flaws in it.
>>
>>81487428
Well, her breasts seem to be a bit lopsided maybe? Her right (frame left) seems to be very diagonal in relation to her chest, similar to my piece >>81485976 which is fine, but I'm assuming she's wearing clothing or a bra which would push both together or at least into a similar position like the left one (frame right) which looks more constricted. Alternatively, you could thicken her dorsal a bit, her upper torso looks a bit thin.

Well, I'm pretty bad at explaining things.

Also damn, I need to draw stuff. Er, any critique on this wip?
>>
>>81487969
I'd work on incorporating perspective in your figures more. The legs on the bunny look fine, but the pelvis on the girl is off. The far end of it is tilted too far towards the viewer.

Also, you have guidelines drawn on the face that you don't seem to be using. The center of the eyes should lie on the eyeline, not above it.

My general advice when it comes to anatomy is to remember that the body can be broken down into several shapes. What's more is to keep in mind that these shapes aren't flat- they have volume and depth. These forms should be used to establish form and the relationships between body parts. While you seem to be following this to some degree, your line art is a bit too loose to establish a really concrete form. However, you use of line weight is great!

Also, your shading doesn't establish an identifiable light source. I would assume the light is coming from the sun in this picture, but your shadows do not reflect that.

Here's one I finished up recently. I have a scattered brain so I tend to leave the final bits unfinished and just get back to them eventually. The shells look a bit off though.

Now I know this an artwork thread but I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to sort of structure a story. I want to lay out a bit of groundwork and get it moving. So far I have thoughts on the topic. Unfortunately I need to be able to look at things to really be able to focus.

Hopefully that made sense a bit tired. I guess what I'm asking is what are some good ways to lay down the structure for a storyboard. Maybe some way to lay down the plot in a more manageable capacity. Any suggestions will help, the only thing I can think of is some sort of vague diagramy thing.
