The cut-a-way gags were pegged pretty early on as being a product of the Simpsons, which had some truly memorable ones. Lots of the early gags were damn funny too.
Family Guy also worked on another level as a parody of 80's sitcoms and the 80's were coming back into the vogue at the time, what with everyone who grew up then reaching their 30's and 40's.
Also, the Simpsons had entered season 9 or 10-ish, and wast starting to lose some its charm, and people were hungry for a new show.
The revived series has new writers- as the old ones left after the show was originally cancelled- and the new crew has taken the characters and much of the comedy in new directions.
