I'm a davespritefag and I'm very happy with how things turned out
He suffered long enough, in a doomed timeline, than for 3 years where he was a second rate dave who was disregarded by most of his friends. Now he gets to be happy as a new being with a much deeper understanding of themselves/dave as a whole and is at peace with all those dead-end existences by seeing where they fit in to the big picture.
Let's be real here, he wouldn't of been able to get over his issues the way he was, with his narrow individual viewpoint. He couldn't solve his problems the way a living growing human could, because he wasn't the living growing dave. He was a doomed dave, a ghost. He would be stuck in that state forever or die. How could he form an individual identity from dave without literally becoming a new person? Because he was literally dave. But not THE dave of that timeline. Not the one that gets to live and grow and do all the dave things. It was an existential issue stemming from magical nonsense (time shenanigans), so it could only be solved by more magical nonsense.
I guess people thought he would become satisfied with his life by tackling his issues the normal way, through growth and development, the way someone with their own life does. But he was everything but normal, he was a magic ghost that was a copy of someone else, and his problem was the farthest thing from normal possible.
AR had pretty much the same issue that was solved the same way. If he couldn't be THE dirk, but still had to exist as a dirk alongside him, it was better to become a new person altogether.
And I love seeing how his personality meshes with nep, her enthusiasm bringing out his goofiness from under the mask of irony he hid behind. They're having so much fun now.
