Rucka posted a podcast he did about his upcoming WW run. I'm only halfway through but some notable things that stuck out to me

>he and Johns have had regular casual chats where Johns would say "you should totally come back to DC"; Johns is the one who told him about Rebirth and asked him to do WW
>Doyle is the editor of the book
>no movie synergy as far as story is concerned; he hasn't seen BvS yet
>only constraint creatively seems to be that part of it had to take place in the present day DCU, like the origin thing is not the only story
>doesn't seem like he's going to retcon everything already done in the new 52
>no plans to address the past SMWW relationship right away, but he's talked to Jurgens about it generally
>>
>>81348994

SAY, does anyone here 1) know anything about the old Gold Key characters (Turok, Dinosaur Hunter, Solar,: Man of the Atom, Magnus, Robot Fighter, and the Mighty Samson) 2) have any recommended reading? seems like they have a team-up comic coming out

it was an immediate recoil, I hadn't been on /co/ today

More from Rucka:

Someone asked again about Azzarello and Finch, and he replied that he's read all of it and reiterated that it has to be addressed head-on. Can't say, upfront, how he's dealing with that, what, if anything, he's changing, etc.

"There's a piece of me that, when I read these demands on Twitter, and it feels snotty, but I want to say 'yeah, but they didn't hire you.'"

Also: "One of the things I was told straight up, eventually there's going to be this big story, you don't have to play in it if you don't want, and I said 'Really? You're making this deal sound really good!'"
>>
>>81349419

I missed the last thread but reading it I really liked how Braniac was done. He was properly intimidating, Vril really did come across like a lab monkey in comparison.

I saw some comments about him being super buff but the idea of Braniac just sort of idly being a real physical threat works for me too.

huh, I wouldn't be surprised if Geoff's one shot sets up an event for next year

also I was poking around twitter and I wouldn't be surprised if Mystery Hand has cameos in all the Rebirth issues (or #1s) like Pandora did at the beginning of the new 52, EVS and Booth both said they were drawing said character

One thing that gave the guardians so much leeway with their fuckups for so long were there really wasn't any competition to stir shit and bring light to any shit they did or caused.

Add in the various sectors and the locals were pretty contained to each other + the span of time between the Guardians fuckups

To be honest Im surprised no one ever toyed with the idea of the galaxy going full on FUCK OFF with the guardians and their glactic policing policy.

1 vs 1 the GLC can handle an empire but say GLC vs. The Khurds, Dominators, Durlans, Thargarians, Hawkmen, Ranns, Daximites, Okkarian Warlords, L.E.G.I.O.N. etc. you'd be looking at an army that could frag OA, Mogo, and everyone on it from 2 solar systems overs

Theres the end of LEX Luthors Action comics run where Lex fights Brainiac in space that shows off just some of Brainiac's shit.

In the same way that he boosted his intelligence he's done to his body as well. Certainly not in the Lobo, Despero, Superman tier of strength but more than enough to smash a skull or rip some shit up

The fact that there are regions Lanterns do not operate it in makes me think they must have a general agreement that planets/systems sign off on. Or a writ from some massive planetary alliance that agrees wherever they are not specifically requested NOT to be, they have authority.

He talks up Civil War II again and how it's simultaneously political and also totally not and everyone has good points that he changed his mind page to page, and what fucks me up is reading these interviews, do you ever think a lot of people at Marvel, editorial down, actually think Civil War was a well written story? Like, not bullshitting for PR, but seriously thought it was good?

Oh yeah, Coates/Stelfreeze Panther out next week, right? Gotta get that.

Priest on Deathstroke, Coates on Panther, is making me think about the status of minority creatives in the biz and anyone else getting the feeling that David Walker might end up pigeonholed the way Priest did? That'd fucking blowwww.

There's fuck all wrong with a minority creator on minority books as long as they're okay with it. If Walker wants to write the black dudes he can.

Priest didn't (at all) and couldn't get out of it and that was the issue for him. DC is giving him a very public not-a-black-dudes book now. Coates is a completely different kettle of fish to either of them.

DC officially has not said anything about any of the OGNs announced last summer since then. The only updates I've seen have been things said by the creators (and even that has only been Morrison and Manapul confirming they're still coming eventually). Nothing on Milestone in particular but I'd bet it's still kind of in the works in some form.

If Walker wants to, absolutely. The problem is Marvel editorial - even decades later - haven't built up any sort of level of trust here, on every sort of level. Pigeonhole the writers they do have, refuse to scout for new ones for minority characters (giving fucking Nathan Edmondson Red Wolf comes to mind), and so on.

Walker does good work though. Real good work, though Jessica could use some fleshing out in Power Man and Iron Fist.

I think the new PM and IF is total dogshit so I'm not in total agreement with him doing "real good work".

Why should Marvel have put on Red Wolf? Aren't you falling into the pigeonhole trap yourself here?

People worry about this question ALL THE TIME. Should a minority book go to a minority writer for first shot? Is a minority artist or editor good enough (whole separate question about spotlight on writers in comic books here)? Etc etc. No question Marvel and DC are a white boy's club when it comes to writers, but also no question there is no good answer to THIS question.
>>
>>81351316
Not to mention, Bendis retreading his old work is only going to expose his flaws and his "uncomfortable but you can't put your finger on it if you haven't tracked it" treatment of women in his stories to a horrifying magnified degree.

Who's in the biz right now that should do a Jessica Jones solo?

The trouble of "zero native writers in the biz" plus "native character with a Not So Sensitive history to begin with", you should at least SCOUT for talent, is what I'm saying. Or, for god's sake, have someone as a consultant. Talk to people. If you're going to do "native character from the past", and presumably talk about native issues, "white dude on the deep end of conservative" would not be my first choice, and I'd absolutely would advise against doing it without an extra set of eyes or two, and not just your standard editor.

Lemire can't write team books for shit, but he made the smart move in realizing he knew jack shit about First Nations people and actually went and talked to folks to know what he was doing with Equinox.

What prevents NE from doing the same? I don't actually like Edmondson much but, first place, I don't think it's possible to have an objective standard when it comes to this stuff and, second place, you certainly can't have an objective standard if you can't even define what it should be.

I'm not asking that 'who' (even though I wrote 'why') rhetorically. It's literally, what should they have done instead of give it to Edmondson - who may have pitched it, we don't know the details of that appointment.

there was a /co/ rumor--so probably full of shit--that Kot had wanted the book.

They did get a consultant in Veregge, but:

>While details about the hero remain secret, it has been revealed that this Red Wolf will hail from the world of "1872," the "Secret Wars" series where a version of Red Wolf is currently appearing. Therefore, as the announcement points out, his parallel universe origin means he won't be connected to any existing Native American tribe.

>"Nobody should go to this looking as its historical," said series editor Jake Thomas. "He comes from another dimension, after all. But it's very important for us to approach it in as authentic a way as possible. Jeffery offers this, and not just for consultation, but with his creative input -- his covers jump out from 100 feet away."

I have an admitted soft-spot for nitpickers who note things like:

>I really like westerns. I actually really liked the recent 1872. Sadly, Red Wolf #1 is not for me, neither really a 'western,' nor very much a 'spin off' from 1872. Hsssh (above) well states some of my troubles with the first issue; add to this a LOT of annoying 'little' glitches: Red Wolf (and others) consistently mount their horses from the wrong side (now, WHY it's the 'wrong' side, I don't know, but historically, and pretty damn consistently, riders have mounted their steeds from the 'near' side, the horse's left side), and, too, stirrup lengths vary by what must be six to eight inches panel to panel so that a rider riding 'long-legged' is next panel hitched up like a jockey (saddles, and riders, don't work that way)

This amused me

>I LIKE the Poison Ivy series. I like everything about it. But these handful of online fans are NUTS. It's like they're wandering around like lost puppies wondering why there's no “Poison Ivy Rebirth series”. Uh, hey dummies, why the heck WOULD there be one? The character is only halfway through with the first MINI-series she's ever had. If it's good enough and enough people like it, then Poison Ivy will get another series, mini or ongoing, SOMETIME in the future. Enough with the sob stories and online campaigns. It's a totally untested product and, in all honesty, it isn't all that great or necessary or different. I mean, I LIKE it but it's not Ms. Marvel or Monstress or something remotely filling any kind of noteworthy niche.

>Oh, by the way, for everyone who might think that “little girls need this book”. Poison Ivy kills people just for looking at her the wrong way. She's not some sort of role model.

>Oh, by the way, for everyone who might think that “little girls need this book”. Poison Ivy kills people just for looking at her the wrong way. She's not some sort of role model.

This comment rubs me the wrong way, but I guess it's meant specifically against those people who argue for female characters as role models.

Because I would consider like a 14 year old to be a little girl but I wouldn't say Ivy's mini has content inappropriate for someone that age.

Some people do need to look into things better and use their brains.
Like I keep seeing people wondering why basically no DCYou artists are on Rebirth books even though DCYou stuff reaches #12 in May. You know, a month before Rebirth starts. The bare minimum time to start planning and drawing a new book would be like 3 months, and that's assuming they don't want to work somewhere else.

Didio said the best selling mini may get an ongoing, and they don't know how low any of the minis are gonna settle yet. Though Ivy is doing the best so far.

It's for those people who think "Oh it's a female character! GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR GIRLS!"

Like the people who think Harley having a toxic relationship is "harmful to young girls" and should be absolved and removed.

No shit it's harmful. It's a character flaw it's supposed to be a bad thing.

I haven't been reading Ivy's mini but I really did like her confliction in Gotham City Sirens a lot. The failed attempt at living a normal life, the fact that she can't bare to live in one world for too long.

That kind of stuff could be really interesting if fleshed out more though.

I like this team, it's has a decent mix between traditional heroes and anti-heroes.

I wonder what, if you polled Comics Fandom At Large, you'd get as their JSA. I suspect Robinson/Goyer/Johns has more of a following and connection these days than the immediate pre-Crisis Roy Thomas stuff (which is what one vocal fan wants back)

Honestly, if they said something like "I know she's a horrible person, I want it anyway." I could respect that.
Fuck, if Marvel announced "Moonstone tricks the Marvel Universe" I would read that NOW, and she's practically a sociopath.

I think it depends what segment of Comics Fandom we're talking about, too. The first JSA I ever read was Robinson/Goyer/Johns since that was what was being published/collected when I got into comics, while the Thomas stuff has never gotten much of a push in my time.

If I was into comics in the first half of the 1980s? That might be different. I never know who's more prevalent, really -- defining "fandom" can be hard.

We're lucky it lasted this long tbf. I think sales were already cancellation level at this point (comichron seems to be down so I can't get the actual data). But it would probably get there by #3 if it launched today though. I hate this pleb comic market.

You have to update the game in the iOS or Google store. Apparently the event is live on Android after that but iOS seems to not be turned on.

Comic writers need to get out of the funk of writing for trade. Early cancellation would at least be tolerable if the comics themselves were meaty, but there's way too much "this arc is setting up future plotli-aaaannnnndd cancelled".

Publishers also need to stop pumping out 60+ books each, when there's so many options most stuff sinks, niche stuff goes totally unnoticed
