I just saw this and I thought it was great, what did /co/ think?

Saw it a second time today.
The more I think about it, the more I love it. I absolutely love the focus on spirituality and chinese philosophy in this one, making it much more symbolic (see: the entire final battle with Kai). I mean, I still like the second one best, but this was a great continuation of the overall story and Po's character growth.
But holy fuck the visuals even blow the second one out of the water. They did a lot more creative things like more usage of vibrant cel-shading at times and split screens, plus the watercolor scroll scene in the middle is GORGEOUS. I bought the art book two days ago, I can't fucking wait until it arrives.

Agree with this, my main issues were that the emotional beats were way too similar to the second film with the stuff with Po's fathers, I almost felt like I was watching a rehash of the second film at points, as far as some of the emotional points are concerned. Also Kai was an even duller villain than Tai Lung and when you peak so hard with Shen, to go from that to the very predictable Kai was dissapointing.
Also I do think the second one doesn't get enough credit for some of its aesthetic choices. The scene where Po finally finds out about his past is IMO one of the most visually stunning scenes in any animated film, the colors and presentation was just perfect and honestly is up there as one of my favorite scenes in any animated film.

The characters were fun and likable, it handled the theme of prejudice excellently and was surprisingly nuanced, the story for the most part was interesting and varied and had some very genuinely funny moments and some heartfelt moments. My only issue is that there is a little bit of plot convenience.

Talk about completely undoing your entire message from the first one. Tai Lung was totally right, he was just arbitrarily decided not to be the Dragon Warrior by the universe, and it wasn't his 'fate' to be one. All the training and struggle he did didn't matter in the end, just like it didn't matter for Tigress or the other Furious Five. They worked their whole lives for this, but because the universe just chose some random shlub it doesn't matter. The first movie isn't about understanding that there is nothing specific that makes you special, no easy way to achieve ultimate power(Which, funny enough, is EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO IN THIS MOVIE), it's just the story of the chosen one being chosen and doing what the universe wants him to do.
Man, they fucked that first movie hard, message wise.

The Kung Fu movies were always like this.
A lot of the moral lessons in the series are fine and dandy, but the way they're told within the environment of the movies make the whole messages of the series complete bullshit.
Everyone is special when they make themselves be, I guess. But you'll be even more special if some faggot turtle says your more speicaler then the rest.
No matter who special you think you are, and no matter how hard you work to achieve your place to be considered special. Determination will fuck you in the ass and give it to those more rich and famous instead because they're more special than you will ever be. Did you miss the entire point of Oogway's conversation with Po? Po being chosen wasn't THE WILL OF THE UNIVERSE or some bullshit like that, Oogway specifically chose him because he saw the Panda's he trained with as well as a bright young man with potential. HE chose Po, not the universe.
Also, Tai Lung wasn't chosen for a legit reason: he was egocentric and reckless, and Oogway knew giving a person like that ultimate power would be a bad fucking idea.

I'd disagree with this, The overarching message was being able to get past the past and Shen wasn't able to do that and he died because of it, Po tried to give him a second chance and he chose not to take it because he was so hung up on the prophecy set out by the soothsayer.
I'd disagree with Po being the worst thing in the films, I agree in the third one to an extent but with the second one there was a genuine development in his character that was relatable.

I readily admit I'm a fag that's wants to get all up in Shen's bird hole, but the soothsayer is far more at fualt than he is.
At fault for what? For explicitly warning Shen that if, and only IF, he continued being wicked and petty, whatever his reason for being like that was, he'd be stopped by the black and white warrior. It was a warning. Soothsayer wanted Shen to reevaluate his actions or else it'd be his doom.
But what does Shen do? He becomes even more wicked and petty and slaughters countless innocents so he could avoid his fate AND continue being a bad person, instead of doing some effort to change his ways and prevent everything to even happen.
It was Shen's doing, and choice, from the very start. He chose to do vile things out of resent from his family, he chose to kill the pandas because he couldn't admit he was following a dark path and he chose not to redeem himself when he was served the chance in a silver platter.
Nobody was set out to get him from the start. Shen created his own foes. He was a coward who would rather blame his disgrace into absolutely everyone else but themselves.
