Everyone on /tv/ won't shut the fuck up about capeshit, and so far no one's replied to my thread over there. Besides, /co/ might appreciate this movie more.

So I was babysitting and saw this movie for the first time, and it was surprisingly good. Anyone here seen Coraline and wants to discuss it? What are some similar movies?

Also, I can't get this song out of my head, it's so catchy. I also like the foreshadowing in it. http://youtu.be/Oi9gtzslraI

They Might Be Giants thread?
>>
It's a legitimately good film, but it has its flaws. /co/ was too busy masturbating like chimps to Other Mother's fat ass, though. We moved on; it didn't have a lot of memetic staying power aside from OM. That, and Laika began shitting the bed with awful films that tried to capitalize on Coraline's relative success.

They are to claymation what Tim Burton is to gothic media. Did it good at first, and by a lot, but then spent the rest of their lives milking the fuck out of a concept that only worked well once or twice.
>>
>>81314062
Good song, I heard it was originally going to be in Coraline but they scrapped it. I also heard they wrote the song in the OP.
>>
>>81314094
Well she does have a nice ass, to be honest.
>>
>>81313940
I love Coraline, it's very high on my top 100 movies list.

I still love the Beldam too, I feel theirs a lot of lore surrounding her. It's a great fucking film and I wouldn't change a single thing about it but I do wonder what the original idea for it where it was a musical with songs by They Might Be Giants could've been.
>>
>>81313940
>Besides, /co/ might appreciate this movie more.
Protip, if it has waifus /co/ loves it, if you think the girl is cute welcome home
>>
Anyone else feel like they were setting up a sequel? Probably won't happen, but I thought it was dumb that she threw the key down the well with the sentient hand. Yeah it was smashed but if talking cats and other worlds exist in this universe, then who know what kind of weird magic can repair the hand and have it pick up the key and climb out of the well.

Also, how did that one kid know that Coraline would be outside by the well at the exact moment he did, and how did he get there at the right time to just barely save her from the hand? And why the fuck does an eleven year old kid have a motorcycle? He was riding a motorcycle, right?
>>
>>81313940

The studio that made Coraline, Laika, does amazing stop-motion work. Check out Paranorman and their upcoming Kubo and the two strings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1RXm81AsNo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZefKaANfe0

They also did the Boxtrolls but that's a bit more mixed in it's reception.
>>
>>81314405
Well the Other Mother has a great ass, so I'd assume /co/ adores it.
>>
This scene made me diamons, Rat circus guy was also pretty cool and legitimately terrifying later in the movie
>>
>>81314441
The only thing I remember from Paranorman was a guy coming out as gay and the girl being surprised. It's been too long, I'll have to rewatch it and check out those other movies, thanks anon.

>>
>>81314441
the only thing about Paranorman that i didn't enjoyed was the fact that the protagonist wasn't buddies with the ghosts, you would think his love for zombies and paranormal shit would make him feel curious towards them, try to befriend them which would make his parents think he has imaginary friends and shit, unless that's what happened since its been a long time since i watched it
>>
>>81314441
Holy shit, is that water in Kubo stop motion somehow, or is it post-production CGI?
>>
>>81314607
Damn, Laika knows what's up!
>>
>>81314698

Hard to say, I know from Paranorman that they do a very good job of blending the two together. It wouldn't surprise me if the ocean as a whole was CGI but the water hitting the character in the boat was stop-motion.
>>
Props to Laika, but I don't know how anyone can make stopmotion and not want to blow their brains out. Seriously, it's so damn tedious and you have to get every meticulous detail correct. It would be fun to work on one of these movies though, if only as a voice actor.

Alright, this is a noob question, but with stop motion taking so long, how do they sync lip movements so well and not have it look like Robot Chicken? Do the voice actors record their voices after the shots have been recorded for a movie like this?

How many /co/ years do you have? Don't you remember that audio where Mike Tyson rapes Coraline? Til last year it was on youtube with the title "Coraline 2" but it got removed, probably because of the thread where the girl who dubbed her appeared.

Go on desustorage.org/co/ and search for "Mike Tyson Coraline", you will get the picture.

Kek, most of the posts on there are asking for the audio, there was even one from a few days ago. I'll google it and see what I can find.

Mind that it's not really claymation, though; it's stop-motion, but they use puppets made of some hard material.
You don't see actual clay very often in full-length movies.

Coraline is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. It's literally flawless. There is not a single inherently bad aspect of the movie. Some parts could be better, but there is nothing bad in it, you know? It's a 9/10, if not 9.5/10.

Humorous, dark, has a great moral, full of spectacular visual design and animation. I love it.

If no one's mentioned it yet, you should check out the other films from the same studio, Laika.

Be warned that Box Trolls isn't as good as Coraline and is regarded as Laika's weakest film, but you might want to give it a try if you're interested.

Paranorman, on the other hand, holds up to Coraline pretty well and in some ways may surpass it.

Kubo and the Two Strings come out in August and is looking very good in its trailers.
>>
>>81321273
Is Coraline the only movie out of those that is based on a book?
>>
>>81314420

Sort of. There's potential in exploring the Other Mother's backstory (which in the book at least implied she herself had a mom whom she killed to usurp power from or something), or just seeing Coraline going on more strange journeys.

I know she, ParaNorman, and the kids from Gravity Falls have been the center of a "New Mystery Incorporated kind of idea amongst people, where the kids all gang up to solve mysteries, even some taking the idea to actually include Scooby and the Gang as a kind of "Mystery solving Masters"

Sucked the love and life out of them until nothing remained. I got a chance to read the book and I'd almost wished they had gone with how the fight with Other Father went down.

That's awesome. I remember we read it in school. I should have paid more attention but I was a kid and fuck required reading at that age, am I right?
>>
>>81322044
Nah I loved reading as a kid. It's fucking sad that at the elementary school I work as a substitute librarian there's apparently sixth grade students who can't read past second grade level.

Back on-topic, I thought the book version was pretty ballsy for telling that the cat straight up decapitated one of the rats and thought the walk into the void past the area of the house was some freaky shit.
>>
>>81322044
I use to read a lot of Goosebumps as a kid and steal them school. When the movie came out my nephews got all hyped and asked if I had them. Currently I'm reading them Night of the living Dummy ll. I'm a fan when old kids books come back in style.
>>
>>81322044

Eh, I know that feeling. I refused to read a lot of the required books because I didn't like being told what to read. Fuck Phantom Tollbooth. Movie was fine, sure, but I really didn't care for the book it was based on.

They record the dialogues with the help of the director and the storyboard's sketches, then they start the animation and lip sync process with the pre recorded audio
>>
>>81322819
That's cool. I imagine that' ps really difficult to do with stop motion, especially with this movie because they made tons of figures for each character instead of moving clay around.

Laika uses a 3D printing process to create all the interchangable expressions and lip movements for the stop motion figures. They usually do that sort of planning through handdrawn animated passes and actually, some CG modeling.

Here's a sample of 2D dialog testing on Paranorman

Y'know what I liked even if it throws me for a loop? The inhabitants are just creations by Other Mother but the father and friend both acted in Coraline's best interest. The former broke free from his bonds to give a soul while the latter literally saved her and helped her escape knowing it'd cost him his life.

It's an excellent movie, I always make sure to take my siblings to see the Laika movies in the theaters.

It's not a movie, but a miniseries you might want to try is Over the Garden Wall, pick related. It's about a pair of brothers who windup in an "otherworld" like Coraline did and have to find their way back home. They come across witches, talking animals, demonic doges, and all sorts of interesting characters.

It's 10 episodes that are about 11 episodes each, so you can watch it in one sitting as if it was a movie.
