He was particularly insecure under Wolfman in NTT and under Dixon.
Wolfman tried giving him insecurity again in Nightwing with regards of being afraid of getting too close emotionally with women, stemming from getting taken advantage of emotionally in an early relationship before his NTT days, but Tomasi and everybody else completely ignored it .

When Bruce gets beat up, it's usually because the villain has to win half way through to make it seem like they're challenging and Bruce's victory later seems more rewarding.
When Dick gets beat up, it's usually because the villain needs to look good so Batman can beat the villain up later and Dick just completely fucks off after getting beat up. Or worse, you get something like Forever Evil where him being a damsel is only a reason for Batman to be there.

Unlike his best friend (who doesn't exist anymore) he has spent his entire career as Nightwing desperately trying to get out of Batman's shadow. He cut off ties specifically because he didn't just want to be Batman 2.0 but literally everytime he's on a team he just feels like and comes off as an inferior Batman.
That said, Batman's also an insufferable Mary Sue so maybe he's just Mary Sue Jr.

He hacked into the Justice League's network and hijacked their teleporters without them ever finding out. During his tenure as Batman we see that he's very competent with advanced technology and highly knowledgeable in biological and forensic science as well as history, enough to even impress Damian, Gordon and the League members. He never needs to stretch his genius because he doesn't need contingency plans since he's so resourceful and able to think so quickly on the fly, and unlike Tim he doesn't need to lord his intellect over others since he has nothing to compensate for. Batman repeats over and over again how quickly and easily Dick learned everything he taught him, how's he's ultra-talented at just about everything he puts his mind to.
Add that to the fact that he's the prettiest human in the universe, the perfect gentleman, has a tragic past with none of the baggage, is ultra-charismatic, natural leader, courageous, cool, yadda yadda yadda.
I mean sure he sometimes has daddy issues, is a jerk, or is a womanizer, but those are largely brushed off as uncharacteristic and considered bad writing. It seems like people just want him to be "Batman, but better" which I believe is a disservice to the character.
Though in Grayson he comes off as a narcissist which I suppose is a character flaw, even if it is warranted.

I don't think anyone thinks Dick is a genius. He's clever enough to use a Bat computer that Bruce made to hack into things, but that is about it. He's about as smart as a Daredevil usually. Very basic. In the New 52 Nightwing book he didn't even understand what computer programing code is. Really, Dick in the New 52 is just a massive failure.
He failed to save his childhood friend who later tried to kill him, he failed to save his childhood love interest who was cheating on him and betrayed him with previously mention childhood friend, in DC's Valentines Day special he got stood up by a black girl hero and left in the rain, he got beat up by Lady Shiva when he was Robin only to have her talk about how great he would be one day, then he faced Lady Shiva again in the current time as Nightwing and she beat him up again and was able to kill her target, he spent all his money to buy Haly's Circus only to have the Joker kill some of his employees then burn it down to the ground and capture Dick so Bruce could come rescue him, so he has no money left to his name and all the employees hate him because he put the circus in Gotham, he got captured and beat up by Owlman and Superwoman in Forever Evil and got his identity exposed to the world by them, Owlman then blew up his Chicago apartment possibly killing his old roommate, he was tied to a chair and a gigantic bomb for most of the event and had to have Batman come and save him again.
Just out of all the heroes out there, especially ones just in the Batman family, I don't really see Dick as a big mary sue. Things tend to not really work out for him, like careers, relationships, teams, and so on. He has that Spider-man complex where he can't catch a break and is barely able to scrape by usually, but he is able to keep a general positive attitude and enjoy being a hero, which is thanks to Batman allowing Dick to move on from his past.
