What are some great entry level Superman stories or runs?

I already read All-Star Superman and Superman: Brainiac that was story timed here.

I need more

Birthright.

Birthright

Up, Up, and Away by Busiek and Johns is pretty good.
>>
Birthright , Death and Return. Emperor Joker if you're desperate.

Birthright is going on my shopping list then

How's Red Son? Any other collections to browse around for?
>>
>>81304179
I don't care much for Red Son personally. Maybe check out the Superman: Man of Steel collections by John Byrne.
>>
>>81304017
For the Man Who Has Everything, and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

pretty much any Alan Moore Superman stuff.
>>
>>81304244

What about Red Son didn't you like?

I know this is a shit spoon feed/rec thread but I'd also love to see some discussion on people's likes/dislikes.

Adding Moore to my list

Also I personally really liked Red Son, another good one is Secret Identity but it doesn't take place in the DC universe
>>
The entire Johns/Busiek era that preceded Brainiac is good. Starts with Up, Up, and Away.
>>
I'd read Secret Identity by Busiek. It may not the exactly what you're looking for but it's a story about the soul of Superman and it's a pretty book to look at.

Also if you can find it Superman: Peace on Earth which has been story timed here if you can find an archive
>>
Who the hell keeps on making these rec threads over and over?

A lot of Death and Return is 80's/90's cheese but I always really liked the middle part, Reign of the Supermen, because it's a story about the inspirational effect Supes has on other people and the kinds of folks who try to fill his shoes and live up to him when he's gone.

Red Son isn't bad, the rest of the DCU kinda gets shafted as really bit players while Superman and Lex bitch at each other from across the ocean. End twist is pretty fun if you don't think too hard about it though.

Birthright
Superman for All Seasons
What's So Funny about Truth, Justice, and the American Way?
Red Son
Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

Is Emperor Joker good?
Considering getting it next month.

Red Sun is one of my favorite Superman stories
>>
>>81306599
It has really amazing moments in between a lot of stuff that's either mediocre or VERY comic book-y. Very much your mileage may vary.
>>
So what are the best runs of Action Comics/Mainline Superman?
>>
>>81306906
Kelly, Johns, and Morrison are all pretty good
>>
Joe Casey's run.
Mark Millar's Superman Adventures run
>>
>>81304017
This might be a contentious suggestion but I'd say American Alien is pretty good.

Gonna put in another vote for "What's So Funny about Truth, Justice, and the American Way?"
I've read a few of Supe's storylines, but for some reason the climax of this one made me actually get behind his message. It's pretty nicely handled for being about 40 pages.

gonna second this. The first issue is amazing and the rest are good to great.

Also, if for whatever reason you can't get your hands on the comic, it was also made into an animated movie: "Superman vs. The Elite". That's how I, personally, first experienced the story, and I fucking love it.
>>
>>81308375
Didn't even realize there was an animated adaptation. Gonna have to check that out, thanks anon
>>

I'm reading this right now, it's really well written and I like the small look into Clark Kent's life before superman.

I'm even more surprised that Max Landis wrote this, I guess he really is qualified to get mad about BvS.

OP here

Just cashed my paycheck and bought Birthright

Gonna have fun tonight

Seeing as you have read some entry-level stuff, I highly recommend What's So Funny About Truth, Justice And The American Way. It was the story that turned me from a bit of a Superman fan to a full blown Superman>Batman guy.
>>
>>81304179
Red Son is a pretty great way to look at classic Supes from a new perspective.
Here's the whole thing from an older storytime thread a few years back.

Will do. Everyone in this thread is recommending it so I'll check it out as soon as I'm done with Birthright
