anecdotal example of my own but, my home town It was on of the last to get its mine closed, 93. immediately there was an exodus of people moving off to find work. the community instantly collapsed and in came the slum landlords buying up the houses to rent out. I went on a trip in 98 to london and saw adverts in kings cross for cheap housing in the colliery and with that came druggies and organized crime from london. the place went from friendly town to absolute shithole in 2 years its a window into what the entire North was like in thatcher's era the late closing meant it never recovered like the rest of the North did.
Today my hometown is the most economically deprived town in the UK and eligible for the same EU grants that towns in Romania and Bulgaria get.
That's why people hate Thatcher in the North. Most people don't doubt that the mines needed closing. What they resent is being completely abandoned and left to degenerate and be exploited by slum landlords/ druggies and gangs.
