Homestuck defies INITIAL expectations but at the very least attempts to do so in a way that is still consistent with the ideas it sets up. Sometimes it fails in doing so but you can see that the attempt is made, even if it is in some weak lamesauce meta way.
For example, by making a point of defying an expectation of everyone being involved in a romance, by keeping Jade alone, using the pre-established notion of Space being associated with loneliness (which a lot of people theorized even before it became official in-comic).
