Well, there are about 6 or so of them, plus I doubt Aaron was browsing /k/ at the time when he thought of these.
As well as a walking hand grenade seeming like a probable idea for a 1950's mad science R&D corporation.
>>
>>81258265
>>81258339
Given the variable settings of other zero-based weaponry, it could be that they've cranked themselves up to maximum just to be extra thorough.
>>
>>81258265

Well, it's probably worse because 12 of them went off... but seriously, are you going to rob a house with a "protected by buddibombs" sticker in the window?

'cause I sure the fuck wouldn't.

>>
>>81258411
It was only 6 in her handbag, which means Holly still has 6 at home to accidentally kill her family with.
>>
>>81258351
Unless there was a simple way she could disarm them. It seems a pretty major feature to omit.

I mean, if they went for Ethel solely because they'd identified her as a mutant, they wouldn't have waited for Holly to get to a safe distance. It would have made much more sense to detonate there and then to stop her potentially spreading the virus (or word about it) too.

That they still went off when the husband arrived but after Holly had gone implies they were just being loyal to their owner. So maybe she could have done something. Or they're really badly designed and she couldn't. Unfortunately we can't really know for sure either way unless Aaron decides to actually explain the things at some point.

Ethel was not gonna eat holly, she said it herself... she was just coming to terms with her new senses,

Ethel showed perfect control of herself, the only thing that ruined a reasonably humane and sensible interaction between two persons were the grenades Holly brought.

Holly clearly considered the threat real, and the bombs concurred.
>>
>>81259138

doesn't mean it was a real threat like anon i quoted implied.

Ethel did not know that she had transformed into a snake, but rather a limbless creature she had no knowledge of. Quite explainable considering how calmly she acted in the situation with Holly.

No, I thought she was dead from the moment Holly picked up the phone. But that's the point.

Holly + robot bombs practically screamed "she's going to accidentally kill someone", when it's Endtown and people die pointlessly/horribly. So it doesn't really come as a shock, and is a bit too obviously adding someone to kill (since we already know the ultimate outcomes for Holly, her father & Lyn).
>>
>>81260244

we know the outcome for holly and doc chase, but not lyn, at least not specifically... i assume he dies too but we don't know for sure.

I'm sure someone is asking him right now. But I don't think they do actually protect the owner because logic would mean they wouldn't go off if the target simply chased them and stayed in range.

Likely they have absurd instructions like you must toss a buddibomb at target, jump into the nearest trench or foxhole, and being caught in the blast voids the warranty and clears APEX of liability.

The house blew up because of the Buddibombs, which weren't intentionally activated by Holly and were clearly falsely advertised. As we just saw, they probably would've killed her too if she hadn't bailed.

The most you can say is that she killed Ethel completely unintentionally, which still makes Jim half-right in implying that Holly could never kill a person. Heck, she may still feel guilty about it, which might have been the reason she fainted.

Reminds me of Roland Tembo's quote after Eddie was eaten by the Rexes.

Their troubles are over now. Ours are just beginning.

These two died quickly and with only moderate fear and confusion, rather than perishing miserably after years of soul grinding existence in the great waste. Which is more than can be said for most characters in the comic.

She brought the bombs with her and they were doing exactly what they were supposed to: identify a threat and take it out. Holly clearly thought Ethel was a threat, so you can't blame the bombs for thinking the same.

And once activated it's not like she did anything to try to correct or stop them. All she did was wait until the snake was distracted and make a run for it. There's no indication the bombs were going against Holly's wishes; at best she only cared about saving her own skin, at worst she was thankful for an opportunity to escape.

>>81260970

Hopefully, because they just seem to raise more questions with each page. Though we'll likely discover Holly's actual thoughts soon enough (kinda hard to tell right now when it was nothing but screaming and/or trying not to scream).

>>
>>81268575
the buddybombs did exactly what they were supposed to do

a big snake is a threat. A mutant (assuming APEX consumer products are programmed for them) is a threat based on what we know of APEX protocol through the Topsiders.

Whatever buddybombs key on is the clue here. Maybe Holly pleading for her life activated them or maybe it was something Ethel radiated that the bombs could detect.

If they do detect mutants, it seems strange the topsiders would stop using them (unless Aaron just means they stopped using the 'consumer' model). Dude, it's pretty clear at this point that the Buddibombs don't identify threats or protect their owners. Their true purpose is obviously to kill any and all mutants that come within range of them in order to keep a tight lid on everything that's going on and/or keep the mutations from spreading. It's not like the Buddibombs heard her scream and suddenly realized that Ethel was a threat. She also screamed right at the Buddibombs when she first got them, why didn't they come out and kill everyone right then and there? They detect mutants and kill them, I doubt it's anything more than that. Heck, Holly will probably have to get away from her own Buddibombs at some point if she mutates before getting rid of them.

>All she did was wait until the snake was distracted and make a run for it.
She was terrified. Her friend just turned into a snake (who said herself that Holly's fear was making her hungry) and 6 of her Buddibombs activated and targeted Ethel. She's also got a baby to look out for, whichever way you look at it it was a dangerous place to be. The Buddibombs are advertised to only go after real threats, so in that case Ethel would have been a threat, which she wouldn't have had any basis to disagree on. On the other hand, if she realized that the Buddibombs were falsely advertised, it's not a stretch to assume her safety (and the safety of her baby) were not a high priority. One way or another, when a bunch of little bombs latch on to something two feet away from you saying "BAD" repeatedly and you have a baby to protect, you shouldn't be around one way or another. She didn't just fucking plan out a whole scheme to sick the Buddibombs at Ethel and get away at just the right moment so the explosion could kill both her and her husband while Holly stands outside with an evil Grinch smile. Yes, she was saving her own skin, that's what a pregnant woman is supposed to do.

Because she wasn't screaming for them not to eat her, there wasn't a large snake present, and they hadn't been turned on yet?

>Dude, it's pretty clear at this point that the Buddibombs don't identify threats or protect their owners.
We've only seen them activate once, it was in a situation where there was a perceived threat and the owner didn't get hurt. That's entirely consistent with what they're supposed to do. Holly had even been warned about how dangerous they were (>>81268575) so you can't say she was ignorant of what they did.
>>
>>81258265
>>81258351
Why haven't you people remembered who made those things?
It's Apex! They are the stereotypical "This can be used as a weapon? Make it bigger!" corporation that most likely caused, if not at least supplied the ammunition for World War 3: Doomsday Edition.

>>
>>81258265

>>

Right, but let's take that comic as an example. According to Holly, the Buddibombs are triggered by real threats, not by her feeling threatened. If this advertising was correct, then Ethel was a real threat. If anything, I think that the page you linked proves that she wasn't aware of their true purpose. Lyn didn't trust them, but Holly did. That certainly may have been a mistake, but for a pregnant woman concerned for her safety and the safety of her family, there's a reason she felt that way besides her being a cruel and selfish monster, which despite peoples' bitching on here isn't actually her primary character trait.

The bombs don't trigger from her feeling threatened; I'm saying the fact that she felt threatened validates the bomb's assessment that there was a real threat to her. Which means they're doing exactly what Holly would expect and want them to do in the situation. Hence: working as advertised.

MOUSE OF MURDER

But seriously, the buddibombs were a plot device and we'll probably never see them in action again. We don't know exactly how they work, or if they could be turned off somehow.

Either way, she's still responsible for bringing the damn things.

More importantly, if Wally. Chic, and Kirbee can interact with the world; where have they been this whole time? Obviously they didn't see any of this, or they'd have run away too. I really hope this flashback / illusion / dreamworld / forced character development thing has an explanation behind it, but I know it's just going to be some marx-ex-machina shit.

Uh, no, according to their description, they react to real threat. Plus, it's more than likely that Apex programmed them to automtically react to mutant, it(s confirmed by the size of the blast.

in either, way, it's really retard to say that Holly killed Ethel because of bombs that Ethel gave to her in the first place.
>>
>>81272989
Or she thought the bombs could help without whatever the problem was. Clogged drains or something.
>>

i doubt that, the purse was the first thing she grabbed before leaving her place, im pretty sure the only reason she took it was for the bombs in it.

Giving someone a gun doesn't absolve them of guilt if they later shoot you with it.

They're an absurdly dangerous product. Holly knew this, and even had fights with Lyn over them. Yet in spite of that, she had still been actively attempting to acquire them herself. All that happened in the end was that she was given some first. And chances are they got them for her, because they knew she wanted them.

The comic make sure to display that Apex has convinced almost everyone, including Holly, their Buddy Bomb are 100% safe.

Holly says they're child-friendly, not safe. She clearly acknowledges they're still bombs, and there's no suggestion of them being non-lethal, or that she's unaware of their operation.

>None of that make Holly guilty of Ethel's death.
Yes. Their source is irrelevant to whether she's guilty of anything. That was my point.

It's (probably) not murder, but culpability goes beyond just that.

Except no. The way they are designed, the responsibility fall entirely on Apex. This is the direct consequence of calling something 100% safe.

>Holly says they're child-friendly, not safe.
Apex says they are and are designed to only activate in case of real threat. The assertion of threat fall entirely on Apex.

>She clearly acknowledges they're still bombs, and there's no suggestion of them being non-lethal, or that she's unaware of their operation.
Apex brand them as safe-to-carry bombs. They are actually designed to be carried by everyone at any times.

Holly has zero reason to believe the bomb would attack her friends when she went to her home.

>It's (probably) not murder, but culpability goes beyond just that.
There is no culpability when the product is branded as being safe.

>>

The packaging says they're BuddiBombs, from Apex, have genuine ITA and there are twelve of them.

Apex never claim the things to be safe.

And as far as we know, it's true. Provided they don't suddenly mutate or anything, they could play marbles with the things. Holly chucked them all over the floor without setting them off.

The only time I had reservations was when Aaron Marx first turned up. It felt like one of those moments where the author got bored and decided things weren't sufficiently ker-azy so here's scatterbrained Doctor Who! Like that one era when suddenly all webcomics set in college suddenly had a wacky non-human roommate. The next few times though I got over that and now I'm def. curious what his deal is.

I know you guys have probably had the discussion already but the stuff with Jim was nuts. Reading it at midnight just amped up how nightmarish that whole sequence from the Schism to the escape was. There's no way the syndrome is purely medical if it can grant sufferers (victims?) that kind of magical insight.
>>
>>81278285
There's more to Jim's schism syndrome in particular. I'm currently on my phone, and don't have the file where Aaron explains the whole "I"/Jimgod thing.
Normal schism just drives you insane.
>>
>>81278285

>Aaron marx

Yeah, he does the same for everyone, no one really likes him and the author knows this, thats why he turned him down a little i believe.

>There's no way the syndrome is purely medical

technically it is, it just drives you insane, however Jim had more than just schism, he was actually being possessed by an unknown entity known as "I" or "EYE", we still know very little about it, but we will get there in time.
