Who is the worst comic book writer?
>>
>>81237994
I dislike Scott Lobdell the most
>>
Loeb.
>>
>>81237994
CM Punk
>>
Bendis
>>
>>81237994
Not him. He is not good but not that shit.

Chuck Austen's X-Men was the worst mainstream comics I have read, I think
>>
>>81238070
Loeb was good at one point though.
>>
>>81237994
Wasn't his Daredevil pretty okay?
>>
>>81238141
he was average, his best books are carried by Tim Sale. His writing is some of the dullest shit out there and always has been
>>
Lobdell
>>
>>81238141
Was he???

I'm not really familiar with his pre-DC stuff, which was generally pretty bad and only made passable because of great artists

Didn't he used to work on Cable or some shit?
>>
>>81238196

He had some alright Green Arrow stuff too. He is just a really really bad Batman writer.
>>
Wasn't Meltzer publicly asked to stop writing comics altogether after Identity Crisis?

Also, Austen was banned from ever working for Marvel again and then there's Mar-Ville.
>>
>>81237994
Humphries or Hopeless

Long Halloween and Dark Victory were great though.
I haven't read them, but I've heard nothing but good stuff about the Colors series.
>>
Hergé
>>
>>81238258
Which is Ironic since he is a huge Batman fan and yet has written other superheros better then he has Batman.
>>
>>81238389
What if that's the rule of comics? You shouldn't write your favorites?
>>
Scott Snyder.
>>
Chuck Austen. I still haven't recovered.
>>
>>81238560

>>81237994
Dixon

long halloween was a mindless, mediocre mystery drawn out for 13 issues. In trade form it doesn't work because you can digest the information all at once. The mystery of Holiday becomes irrelevant. Hell, Loeb even makes the mystery of the killer irrelevant by never revealing who it is. He just draws it out and tricks readers into buying a thing and doesn't reward the effort. they cheat and put bullshit red herrings in just for dramatic sakes. It tries to work within the tropes of classic noir stories but always ends up using them ineffectively i.e. the micro components of the story taking place weeks/months apart - disrupts the narrative. a good mystery is tight/closed, at most taking place within a month. one could argue its disrupting the rules and reinventing them, but one should actually know the rules before trying to break them and loeb barely knows them, much less executes them properly. Hell, even loeb's narration is clunky. It's dramatic and meaningless to a fault. Good narration in mysteries always serves a purpose - it contains clues, offers analysis of events, etc. - Loeb just narrates because noir prose looks cool to him, and thats it

The only redeeming factor of this book is Sale
>>
Tom King
>>
>>81238444
That's always been the rule. ie Bendis with Luke Cage, Slott with Spider-Man.

What about Geoff Johns? He does that and it works out fine.
>>
>>81237994
Chuck Austen by a country mile.

Then basically every body on the story time of pain list

As much as I would like for him to be terrible and fail his comics aren't that bad.
>>
>>81238707
>>81238444
the difference is geoff johns writes his favorites but he's always been even about them. Johns loves Hal Jordan it's obvious. He admires the qualities of fearlessness and bravery in Hal that exemplify what a Lantern should be, but he also recognizes that Hal is a bit of an idiot, and a big fuck-up too (although he retconned parallax into a space bug). He uses the flaws of his favorites in order to reconstruct them - Hal has to earn back the respect of the Lantern Corp and fix his mistakes or Nobody wants Barry back because he died in the most epically heroic fashion possible, so he has to reassert his place in the world and find myself. This reconstruction is what allows Geoff to create new character arcs for favorites past their usual prime. The most recent example is work on Lex Luthor. Luthor is an evil corporate businessman just realizing the damage he's done, so he helps save the world and joins the justice league in order to learn how to better himself - etc.
>>
>>81238663
I disagree, even granting that the narrative is clunky, Loeb handles characters really well. Its why Hush is fun to read even though the mystery is pointless shit.

>>
>>81238890
hush is filler too fuck. It reads like a greatest hits of batman rather than a singular, coherent story, like loeb and lee were just looking to pad what should have at most been a 7 issue arc into something longer
>>
my vote for the worst comic writer is mark millar
>>
>>81237994
Penders
>>
>>81239195
red son is good
>>
>>81239071
I completely agree, but everyone in that book is written terrifically. Loeb nails everyone's personality and relationships. Its why his Marvel Color books are so good. They're character driven instead of sprawling mysteries.
>>
Jimmy Palmiotti & Amanda Conner. Fuckers can't write one of the easy characters right
>>
>>81238956
Nigga no. It started off great but ended with taking a ginormous shit on mysterio.
>>
>>81238107
Brian Michael Bendis?
>>
>>81239469
Whatever they're doing can't stop making money hand over fist, so they must be doing something right. Hell, when interviewed for the Rebirth panel they basically said their plan was to keep doing exactly what they've been doing.
>>
>>81239469
Power girl and all star western are good but that's it.
>>
>>81239566
Yeah but that doesn't mean that character is written right

>>81239576
Key person there: Justin Gray
>>
John Byrne.
>>
>>81239646
Was he always so crazy?
>>
>>81237994
Ken Penders.
>>
>>81238689
I thought Slott hated Spider-Man?
>>
>>81238253
The colors series for marvel is great in a nastolgic sence. It's like marvels or darwin cooks dc stuff. Very much a perfect slice of a time period.
>>
>>81239366
the problem with mark millar initially was how cynical and edgy he was. "haha, look at my edgy satire of superheroes" (nemesis, kick-ass). In relation to that, works like Huck and Starlight feel so disingenuine when you know nemesis, kick-ass, and the authority exist. "oh I invented Huck because I feel like Superman isn't superman oh gee" but Huck is just dopey, forrest gump-ized bullshit that's doe-eyed "oh im gonna do a sweet story". And it becomes even worse when you realize he works for Fox and is just doing this shit for another shitty, cash-grab film. It's so fucking manipulative in a glib manner and uses traumatic events for simplistic overwriting and fuel for more bullshit comics
>>
>>81237994
Your favorite of course. You have shit taste and your opinions are wrong.
>>
>>81239536
but Mysterio was never interesting
>>
A lot of people in this thread are just mediocre. Not enough Beechens being named.
>>
>>81238663
Holiday killer was more than one person. Dents wife totally killed someone and dent took the blame as two face.
>>
>>81237994
Garth Ennis.

All he can write is gore-porn and anti-religious propaganda.
>>
>>81238196
It was fucking amazing. I can never hate on kevin smith. not a big fan of most of his films but that guy has a passion for comics. but more importantly he helped with the marvel knights line which as far as i'm concerned was the only thing that kept marvel from sinking utterly into shit in the late 90s. So that dude always gets props from me.
>>
>>81239808
He didn't have to be.
>>
>>81238785
maybe screenwriter. but from what i know he has only written like 2 things i think. and american alien was pretty good. Really interesting and personal take on clark kent as a human being.
>>
>>81239536
What? the mysterio bit was the best part. How he manipulated everything the whole time.
>>
>>81237994
His Green Arrow and Daredevil books are okay.
>>81238070
His color books are great.
>>81238107
Alias and Daredevil were good.
>>81238522
Swamp Thing was good, as was the Black Mirror. He just sucks at writing Joker and Bat events.
>>81238643
His Robin, Nightwing, and Birds of Prey are all good
>>81238673
0/10
>>81239195
As long as he's not being edgy for the sake of edgy, he can be good. I quite enjoy Red Son and Starlight, for example.
>>81239469
Their Power Girl was good.
>>81239956
He wrote one of the best Hellblazer runs, and Hitman was great.

>>81238127
>>81239845
Correct answers
>>
>>81238070
Batman, Catwoman, and Marvel colors are all good.

>>81238107
His Daredevil is great. UMS is deeply flawed but fun.

>>81239195
Red Son and Ultimates. Which I honestly think Morrison ghost wrote both of, so maybe he fits.

>>81239956
Edgy as fuck sure, but his Punisher has some fantastic moments.

the best parts of garth ennis' work is that he writes characters - despite whatever origin they may have - as remarkably human. You can empathize - not necessarily agree with, but emphatize - with characters like punisher, hitman, or cassidy because they are as remarkably flawed as we are. He writes human relationships semi-realistically

also fuck you if you can't enjoy potty humor.

>What is Power Girl, All Star Western/Jonah Hex, GI Zombie

Harley Quinn is written like that because that's what a huge portion of her following expects her to be written, Deadpool with tits.

Once upon a time, DC Comics were selling so poorly that Warners decided to license them to Marvel (not sell, as some stupid people believe). It hadn't gone far, only a meeting between then-EiC Jim Shooter and a guy at Warners, but it somehow leaked around the Marvel office.

A couple days later, John Byrne showed up at the Marvel offices with his pencilled and inked cover for Superman #1. Keep in mind there was nothing finalized, nothing beyond some informal talks. Yet he had the cover complete, along with an outline of his plan for the Superman book that Marvel didn't have and even if they did that he wasn't offered. But he really wanted the job, you see. He'd seen Superman 1. 1,100 times.
>>
>>81238127
He also wrote terrible Avengers.
He ressurected the Hank Pym wife beater meme because of his own daddy issues
>>
>>81237994
Andrew Dobson.
>>
>>81240828
Key Person there: Justin Gray. Without Gray in there to keep Palmiotti in check his writing is shit
>>
I just want to hear his opinions on BvS and gush about DD season 2. Wish he'd stop being a fat fag and do the podcast already.
