I've heard some criticism of the Superman costume, as well as a few others, as being basically US flags and the comics are playing to jingoistic nonsense and power fantasy.
Which is all true on some level. The costume and appearance of Supes is stimulating to the eye and mind on a deep level though, that late 90s version where he looks middle aged and chunky and stern is awesome art. That picture is brilliant.
