If I remember right from some interviews around that time Willis was saying how Smith would just be high all the time while filming and constantly rewriting the script on the fly, and Willis just thought that was all incredibly unprofessional so just phoned it in and wouldn't socialise with them. I guess basically their two styles don't mesh well together
