wonder where these guys are.jpg
375 KB, 577x1800
There are some characters like Mimic and Lifeguard and Morph who I don't expect writers to bother with because they're not important, never have been, and have made no impact on the readership, right? But man, there's a LOT of important X-Men characters who have been allowed to just slip between the cracks post-Secret Wars who we literally do not know the whereabouts of in a world where just standing in the wrong spot can kill a mutant.

And yeah, I know, we're supposed to believe Cyclops is dead, but there's obviously some twist coming, so he gets included in the "where the hell are these guys" list.

Let's talk about how bad of a person SCOTT SUMMERS was and how he did that thing that CHANGED EVERYTHING.
>>

Mimic and Morph were great in Exiles. Granted they were alternate versions.

I really should ask some kind drawfag to draw me Scott and Emma in Nazi uniforms with X instead of swastika.

Warlock's still in space, last time I checked.
>>
>>81223048
Many of these guys went missing long before Secret Wars and the others are probably in the X-mansion in Limbo.
>>
>>81223282
Here's the thing. Characters like Wolfsbane, Madrox, etc were given their own 'happily ever after' before Secret Wars, and at that time, that was fine. They could just live out their lives in peaceful obscurity and it didn't matter. I could tell you where they were and what they were up to in broad terms. But now with this whole "Being a mutant on Earth is a lethal situation" status quo, that no longer works. Either we know where they are, or else they're in mortal peril which merits some attention.

Like, go ahead and give them the "background characters at the mansion" treatment, but at least acknowledge their existence, right?

>Lifeguard was on the street-team after Schism.

I've been reading the X-books continuously for like 30 years and even so she had so little impact on me that I can't even recall ever having seen her then and there. That's how inconsequential she is.

>Which Morph?

The new one, from Bendis's Uncanny.

>Mimic showed up two years ago

Was it as little as two years ago? Seems longer. The last I remember seeing him was right after Avengers Vs. X-Men.

Say what you will about there being too many characters in the Summers/Grey clan in the X-Men mythos, but it is singularly bizarre that the only one now present in the books is Cable, and in an Avengers book of all places.

Considering they had Rachel, Emma and the Cuckoos to fill the stop as team psychic but still used Jean Grey because Old Logan needs some young pussy, I would think that she does count.
>>
>>81223560
>>81223751
>>81223821

I don't even think the writers know whether she's supposed to be an alternate version or what at this point. They were certainly written as "the real, specific original X-Men from Earth 616's past, and who must originally return to their own time in order for the timeline to be preserved," but now it's been like two years of in-universe time since they arrived and it's impossible for that to ever happen now since the modern-day X-Men aren't like "Hey, remember that day, a couple of months after we joined the team when we mysteriously grew two years older over-night? That was weird, right?"

I dunno. Maybe since Earth 616 was destroyed and then this new "Prime Earth" was created by Franklin Richards, the past no longer matters and all previous causality is out the window. That would be a fairly neat and tidy way to explain things.

Layla was definitely and unambiguously a mutant, and Madrox was like, a less-evolved form of mutant, as per PAD's explanation; one who lacked the survival mechanism of "keep it a secret until you're old enough to fend for yourself." Which, come to think of it, is also true of Apocalypse, which is a nice little bit of canon synergy.

Rachel Summers, Jubilee, Gambit, Bishop, Dust, Warbird, Hope Summers, Quentin Quire, Shatterstar, Chamber.

Cannonball, Karma, Cipher, Warlock, Pixie, Blink, Nate Grey, Warpath, The Stepford Cuckoos, Dr. Nemesis.

Tabitha Smith, Strong Guy, Jamie Madrox, Emma Frost, Layla Miller, Danger, Cecelia Reyes, Danielle Moonstar, Husk and Domino.
>>
>>81224696

I remember this having been in an interview before the Red Skull imposture as well. Are you sure he's subsequently said "Okay, no, but for reals this time guys, I actually mean it this time that Gambit will be appearing and it won't a ruse next time."
>>
I've always hated how X-Men constantly had these off-shoot team books with a bunch of new kid characters but once their run is over, the characters just vanish so another new group can get a book only to be quickly tossed aside like the rest. Even though they all are pretty much in the same place, you'd be lucky just to get a tiny background cameo of an older X-team member.

And as if to vindicate your point, the next addition of four characters include three student characters who at one time had been central protagonists who I had myself completely forgotten about.

Of course, some of them have the good fortune of getting elevated above this station. Cannonball and Sunspot became Avengers. Magik seems to be here to stay as one of the 'main' X-Men, and Husk has twice been elevated to 'main book' status, by Chuck Austin and later Jason Aaron. Wolfsbane became prominent as a character in X-Factor for many years. Monet has made it from Generation X to being one of the current stars of Uncanny X-Men.

They definitely are the exception rather than the rule, though. And almost all of the ones I cited are either New Mutants from the early 80s, or the sister thereof.
>>
>>81225342

Not to be "that guy" or anything, but just looking at this list of discarded characters, it is interesting that the majority of them are women. It seems like even among the X-Men books where the membership tends towards greater diversity, female characters are somewhat more... disposable by writers than male ones, at least to the extent that there's less of an interest in giving them the spotlight time necessary for them to really blossom as the sort of worthwhile protagonists who, like, say, Storm or Nightcrawler or whoever, will never go away for very long.
>>
>>81225394
Maybe X-Men just has more prominent female than male characters. Maybe unused male characters just die a lot more. Might be a whole lot of stuff causing that. And it could always just be coincidence.
>>
>>81225394
>>81226039
Looking closer at it, it's 18 males and 24 females, so it's not even such a huge gap. It's probably just coincidence.

I tend to think what happens is 'new generations' is that new teams get created to tell a certain story and those characters compliment each other. Once that story ends and their writers leave though, they're kind of adrift. Just the nature of creative changes that a full team almost never transfers over, so there's no real solution to it.

You do get a degree of characters floating to the top though. Magik is A-list now, Laura is arguably being elevated to that level, then you get characters who make it as pretty solid supporting characters. Thinking like Pixie, Idie, etc.

Sometimes a writer can latch on to someone as well, Blindfold would probably have been considered all but forgotten until she became co-lead for a significant run of Legacy.

Everyone had Tempus pegged as a breakout from the last new generation until, well, what happened to her.
>>
>>81226039
>Maybe X-Men just has more prominent female than male characters.

I think they absolutely do.

Hell, the MCU is all kinds of wonky when it comes to women because Marvel simply don't have a ton of them since X-Men is off limits.
>>
>>81224616
This is such an obvious pitch (and one I thought about many times before) that I'm surprised Marvel has never done it before.

And I mean, you can even bring back actual (not evil teen) Jean - Cyclops discovers a way to bring back Jean, tries to go do it himself (due to all the bullshit making it so the X-Men don't trust him), but his brother and kids come along for obvious reasons.

Boom, fun adventure.

>>
>mfw CBR people have a lot of question about the new x-men (surge, hellion, ect) for the x-men editors

>>
>>81226824
Demographics. Most people heavily reading comics today (so for more than, say, 2-3 years) started reading them in the mid-to-late 2000s, which is when these guys were at their peak. These are the characters the posters entered comics with and have the most nostalgia for.

Had we been talking about CBR in the year 2003, we'd probably see a shit-ton of people talking about Generation X.

In 1994, it would be New Mutants. Etc.
>>
>>
>>81223449
>Scott is/went evil
Confirmed Jeanfags (and I suspect Madelynefags) are worse than Stormfags
>>
>>81226880
Except that in 2003, Generation X was still pretty much in play- Joe Casey used most of them in his Uncanny Run and Emma was cucking Jean in New X-Men.

And in 94, most of the New Mutants were either in X-Force, were X-Force antagonists, or were dead.

They have gotten a lot worse about indiscriminately shelving characters since then.

Hickman's Avengers/Spencer's Avengers World. It had Smasher and Cannonball moving to Chandilar to raise their baby. The only reason they returned to Earth in TRO was to help with the Final Incursion. Smasher was shown still being a Superguardian with the Shia'ar in Ultimates, so there's no reason to think that they didn't return to Chandilar after TRO.

Likewise, there's no reason for them to stay on Earth when the planet is inhospitable to both Cannonball and his son when they have a nice apartment waiting for them on Chandilar.

In the 80s with Claremont Storm was a legit leader of the X-Men, and may have been more popular than Cyclops.

From Morrison on the X Men leaders with the couple Scott-Emma, and Storm was away married in Wakanda.
And right now, because of the sjw climate (I am not /pol/ btw) it is very hard to write a female character who is complex and flawed and not an inspirational strong perfect mary sue, and Storm makes that even harder since she is already so powerful.

To be fair, there's not much in the way of strong characterization in Marvel in general. It's not just Storm.

What characters over the last 10 years have really had a strong, definitive voice?

I think Aaron's Quire was a strong, memorable character, and Gillen's version of Yana, with her fucked up sense of duty (lol Colossus) was pretty great and the set-up for Idie was fantastic, but overall there hasn't been all that much character development for anyone, Storm or otherwise.
>>
>>81249012
Evan maybe, you can call WaTX shit all you want but at least Aaron developed Evan feeling about him being a clone of paco lips, which Rememder had already done in uncanny x-force

I honestly think a lot of the core X-Men have really, and a bunch of secondaries who were given focus by writers.

I think Storm is an exception in how bad she's been, she's just such a nothing character. Not even brief attempts to give her some kind of spotlight work.
>>
>>81249490
>legitimately good

It legitimately wasn't. I have trouble remembering a single good thing from the comic that gave us a) the whole dumb mess with Husk, b) Hellfire brats, c) LOL SO RANDUMB ALL DAY ERRYDAY, d) QQ being an insufferable mainlister completely flanderized from Morrison's portrayal , e) focus on completely boring characters and/or OCs over interesting established characters (because Aaron went overboard with his author avatars) and f) Dumb LoSH-style names for his dumb, unimaginative, cardboard kids (Shark Girl? Eye Boy?)

That book was a perfect storm of awfulness. I am having trouble coming up with a worse X-book since Schism.

I'd say Remender and PAD gave strong characterizations to their characters. Hell, it almost gave Psylocke and actual post-90's character before it was all flushed away. Idie and Evan are currently being wasted by Hopeless.

Storm and Rogue I think are the worse cases of weak characters since they always serve the plot and the plot never serves them.

>>
>>81249859

I would unambiguously call it the worst X-book I've read post 2010

Terrible team makeup that never works in the slightest
Bad A-plot that goes nowhere
Very slightly less bad B-plot which is Psylocke/Fantomex/Female-Fantomex/EVIL-Fantomex fuckbuddy drama

It also fucked up the end of Cable and the X-Force with a shitty forced crossover too.
>>
>>81249859
Yes. You know how Fantomex was split into three sepereate people at the end of Remender's run and how Psylocke decided to live with Ego-Fantomex inside EVA?
Well the book starts off with Fantomex gone and Bishop running around killing shit. Puck and Mirage are there for some reason, though I remember Mirage owning a club for like one issues. But none of that really matters since the book is about Psylocke. Female Fanto comes in and her and Psylocke look for Ego-Fanto. Evil-Fanto is there somewhere too. It's lost in a pile of relationship bullshit though as Psylocke and Fem-Fanto begin to date, only for Ego-Fanto to show up and for Psylocke to become confused. Then I think Evil-Fanot gets involved somehow in the relationship. It's baaaad.

>>81249614
The Doop issue was really good. And the Bendis books are easily the worst.

That universe was completely annihilated even before Secret Wars, sadly. Which presumably is why in Secret Wars the AoA we were given was plainly a near cousin of the original.
>>
>>81240122
There was no 616 Morph, rather there was an old X-Men villain called Changeling who eventually secretly joined the X-Men taking Xavier's place while Xavier was secretly preparing to defend the world against an alien invasion. Changeling died while impersonating Xavier.

Morph from the cartoon was Changeling with a name change because of DC having the rights to the name. There was an Age of Apocalypse character named Morph who was the AoA version of Changeling and Exiles Morph is a completely separate character based on AoA Morph.
>>
>>81250383

OP here. Yeah, those other two were right; that's Omega Sentinel; a human/sentinel hybrid who went good, and joined the X-Men for a while. The pic you posted there is from a brief moment when her programming got hacked and she was forced to join the Marauders. After I posted the last version of the OP pic I realized that I ought to have included her in that list.

I also posted this same thread on Reddit this morning:

I have all sorts of temporary headcanon for these kinds of characters.
For instance: The Graduates from the last "new mutants" class are most likely off to college or working their first jobs off in realworld. I imagine a few are doing part-time superheroing in their spare time, like Spiderman used to.
Then there's the moving-on adults like Warbird or half the cast of X-Factor who always said they wanted to integrate into normal lives without mutant crazy every minute. For God's sake, Multiple Man got married, settled down, and moved back home to run the family farm.
Dr. Cecelia Reyes never wanted to be a superhero in the first place, why wouldn't she still be working at the Hospital where we last saw her begin a story?
Five on that list were "Jean Grey's School 4bla-bla" teachers, two were on-call superscientists (and they can just phone it in from their labs where-ever), six more are foriegn nationals who may want to go home.

Then there's my current headcanon fave: anyone not on active X-duty is either sick from the TerrorGene clouds or working relief aid for X-Corp somewhere.

Leech and Artie in Gen X were great- they hung out in a haunted treehouse, got image inducers and ran around as Peter Porker, and were only occasionally miscoloured as one another.

Also, they and Franklin teamed up with Howard the Duck, Tana Nile, and Man-Thing at the end of Franklin's time there.
>>
>>81253460
If they have medicine to help minimize the effects upon Rogue then they wouldn't be restricting that treatment to only the mutants who come back from frequent deaths.
Remember that in the first place the X-Men exist to save the species.
They've also depicted aide camps for those stricken by it, both in Storm's X-Haven (in HELL) and in at least one major city.
It's been said in Uncanny books that mutant healers can't do anything but abate the symptoms temporarily because the crystal gases remain in the bodies doing harm.

I love a character who doesn't take himself too seriously, who has genuine flaws like being a little dimwitted without it being his defining trait, and who's a good friend and a heroic, self-sacrificing figure when the moment calls for it. There's a lot of things about him which make him unique among X-Men characters which just makes him such a refreshing presence.

Oops! My mistake. If I do a fourth version of this image, I'll replace Frenzy and Jubilee with Northstar and Omega Sentinel, at the very least.

Yeah, got Jamie Madrox and Madison Jeffries. Guardian and Vindicator are long-time friends and associates of the X-Men, but have never been members, and I'd say the same is true of Dr. Rao. Penance has been missing for SUCH a long time I left her out along with characters like Greymalkin and Gaia and Gateway (basically anyone whose name starts with G) who are basically not a part of the overall story anymore.

Random is a borderline case. I don't think he's ever been an X-Man either; he was an associate of X-Factor, and he was a part of that "Utopians" group, but not really a part of any official X-Men team the way that, say, the New Mutants and X-Factor are.

Where is Kitty Pride? I don't really remember seeing her in Extraordinary X-Men. Is she in Uncanny? I'd read that but, you know, Land is on art.

And is Karma around? Is Legion still dead (I hope so)? What about Blindfold?

Yeah, only those three have appeared. And they've had a total of like 10 lines between all of them since the book has started. I'm a lot more interested in Alpha Flight and the green-haired chick than Marvel or here other supports.

Kitty is Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Legion is still dead/non-existent, I don't think Blindfold has been used since that story either.

>probably in the X-mansion in Limbo.
