No, the Spongebob movie seemed to be the birth of "new" SpongeBob. Spongebob's voice is more higher-pitched; his character is different - in seasons 1-3 he is an immature adult, in the movie he is a "kid". They even drive this point home by showing him having baby toys in his bedroom, and him screaming and crying a lot more than he did in most of the older episodes.
And just as an example of how things have changed, the entire movie is about Spongebob being a kid and teaching kids that that's okay because kids are awesome! Of course, the entire joke in the first three seasons was that he was an adult who acted immature, but still had some "mature" traits that balanced it out. The movie and the seasons that followed stopped any pretense of being simply good cartoons that all ages could enjoy, it just explicitly aimed itself solely at kids. Rather than writers trying to think of what would make a clever cartoon, they were thinking "what do kids like? Yeah, screaming and crying. Kids laugh at that, right?
And I guess this goes for most movies based on TV shows (which bloat themselves with celebrities and "fresh new characters"), but the celebrity characters sucked (except for Jeffrey tambor as Neptune), very cliche, and didn't have any memorable personality or funny lines (particularly Mindy).
So stop saying Spongebob went downhill "after the movie", because it really went downhill the second the movie was released.

For me its when they started doing shit like Atlantis Squarepantis and hyping Johnny Depp who had like 3 lines in the entire episode. Also Nick dumping 5 episodes in 1 week in some stupid Week of Sponge special or whatever is stupid too.
