>On Saturday I wrote about the poor Friday-to-Sunday hold that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffered in China this past weekend, thinking that Chinese movie audiences were unique in their haste to forget about the widely panned superhero mashup.

>But after studying the film’s global release results, I realized that I couldn’t have been more wrong.

>Things were far worse in North America than in China. You couldn’t have emptied North American theaters where the movie screened faster if you’d yelled ‘fire’ in the middle of the auditoriums.

>Indeed, according to the figures I’ve compiled from Boxofficemojo.com, Batman v Superman has set a new record for the worst Friday-to-Sunday drop for a superhero movie release in modern North American box office history. In dropping 55% from its $82 million Friday debut to its $37 million gross on Sunday, it pummeled all prior records for weakness in theatrical staying power. It even beat the nearly universally reviled and now long-forgotten Fantastic Four reboot, which dropped a comparatively modest 48% across its opening weekend in the summer of 2015.

>what is Easter
>>
>>81205380
All this is true BUT it's also the only Superhero movie to open over the Easter holiday.

All movies that debut on Easter weekend suffer these horrible Friday to Sunday drops. Furious 7, which topped over a billion worldwide, also suffered a drop of over 50% from Friday to Sunday. Easter Sunday is death for any movie.

Now the reviews and word of mouth clearly aren't helping the film in the slightest, but the biggest reason it dropped like it did is because Warner decided for an Easter release rather than something much more sensible. Clearly they're fucking retarded and should have opened after a public holiday that's only ever produced 1 movie that's made over 400m worldwide TOTAL.
>>
> release Easter weekend

Is there any worse holiday to release on than Easter? I'm seriously wracking my brains here. Even Xmas day has people going to the cinemas with the family for Xmas movies.

there goes a billion

the domestic 4-day (including $24 million of previews on Thursday night's limited release) comes to $166,007,347, for a fairly ordinary $142,007,347 3-day total (Thursday's release appears to have now been rolled into Friday's totals, but was previously reported separately; it's possible they just wanted to claim that record Easter opening from Furious 7 to sound popular and drive fresh audiences in, but it obviously has the downside of creating a record fall)

that indicates a "good" first week total of $213m; a 4 week of 399 and a 90 day of somewhere in the region of $425m

if it falls like Man of Steel that's going to be significantly lower; a 63% fall in the second week, 46% the third, 49% the fourth, then such small gains after that until the end that it only adds 5% to the 4-week total

that would put BvS on something like $413m domestic at 90 days; about 30% up on MoS at the same ticket price

however MoS actually enjoyed a very strong opening weekend; even accounting for the BvS previews the Friday-Saturday-Sunday picture is one of steady drops; if subsequent weeks are more directly in line (rather than proportionally) with MoS, then this 4-day is 35% of BvS' total, meaning a domestic final more like $275m

the mean of these may be a more likely result, something in the range of 371 to 344; unless the international is significantly stronger, a billion is a distant dream

>there goes a billion

It might still make a $1 billion but it will struggle to it. The biggest reason why BvS wont make one billion is it flopping in China.

http://chinafilminsider.com/china-box-office-batman-v-superman-fails-pack-punch/

BvS will barely make $100 million in China where they were expecting somewhere over $150 million. BvS will have to make up that missing $50+ million from somewhere and since it has opened everywhere in the world, there is nowhere else.
>>
>>81207414
BvS only made 38 million more than MoS opening weekend and MoS didnt even make 300 million domestically.

I'm curious to see what kind of legs BvS has in the US, if it will be worse than MoS.

MoS only made 63 million in China.
>>
>>81207414
This. Also, bvs is expected to make less than Antman in china. ANTMAN > BATMAN and SUPERMAN

>MoS didnt even make 300 million domestically.
BvS has Batman in it and he is still a big draw. The last 2 Batman Nolan movies still made $1 Billion worldwide.

>MoS only made 63 million in China.
China's movie business is growing exponetially like 20% - 30% every year. This makes year-to-year comparison hard for the Chinese box office because of its explosive growth. Just one month ago, "Mermaid" broke $500 million at the Chinese box office which would have been impossible a few year ago. $63 million in 2013 is equivalent to about $125 million today 2016.

One of the biggest things that normies were disappointed by was probably the fact that there was no real Batman vs Superman.

Sure it's a fun movie to watch with friends as they get drunk and rip it apart, hell it might even be a great guilty pleasure movie. Yeah, but it wasn't that long. Blade was out by 1998, or as I call it the movie that the Matrix stole it's swagger from. Xmen was out by the new millennium and Spiderman by 02. This wasn't like how the prequels killed space operas for 5 years.

I guess that's impressive.

I know I just sound like another /tv/ shitposter but I genuinely didn't enjoy it and felt myself nodding off as the movie went, even though I saw it in early afternoon. The scenes seemed terribly disjointed too, leading to weird changes in tone or scenes that didn't fit well with others.

Also WHY THE FUCK IS GOTHAM RIGHT NEXT TO METROPOLIS. LEX LITERALLY POINTED TO GOTHAM FROM HIS TOWER.
>>
>>81212764
It's more like it killed Batman movies for years. I was in high school when Batman Begins came out and people didn't even want to see it because Batman & Robin left such a bad taste everyone's mouth. And it showed cause it didn't really make that much money. It wasn't until TDK when Batman got super popular again.

Honestly if they gave Luthor white face paint and called him The Joker it would have been so much better.

I despise how we know NOTHING about Luthor, why he has so much influence, why he hates Superman, why he's an expert in so many fields alongside being a business mogul... we get no backstory and no motivation.

Affleck put in one of the best Batman performances in years and it's going to be associated with shit now. He really wanted this role.

An obvious and noteworthy exception.

Really, though, complaining about Friday-to-Sunday dropoff on Easter weekend is dumb. Between people being off for Good Friday and doing family/holiday stuff on Sunday, it's normal for this particular weekend.

Wait. Wait. Wait.
People are actually praising this portrayal of Batman? The useless paranoid schizophrenic who murders people for transporting something for a well-respected businessman in order to steal a weapon to kill an individual who has done nothing but stellar heroics on the admitted 1% chance he might do something bad because bad dreams said so? All delivered to the screen by a drearily boring, deadpan Affleck?

Suicide Squad is done

Wondy is done filming and is in post-production

JL is set to begin filming in a couple weeks

So we may see some script changes in JL if WB feels the negative critical reception or underperforming box office returns are severe enough. But I doubt they're going to pull Snyder at such a late juncture.

I wouldn't mind if Terrio and Affleck went through the script and fixed it up as they went.

>How the fuck else would you do a big superhero fight other than use CGI?
You probably can't. I mean I'm just telling you how I felt. Maybe it was just to big and fake for me to feel invested in it. Maybe big CGI scenes are so overused theses days so that now they just don't feel special to me anymore. Maybe its not the CGI but the directors vision that's the issue. I honestly don't have an answer. All I can say is how I felt, and that feeling was underwhelmed.

I was fine with Bale's flat affect because he was basically written as a kind of empty warrior-monk, a walking facsimile who turned his entire life into an act for the cameras. Guy was basically an angrier, punchier Jedi.

It's actually still some way behind The Passion of the Christ and The Matrix Reloaded if you count international gross. It won't be passing either.

If you don't, it's also behind American Sniper and Saving Private Ryan. The only one of those it's going to pass is American Sniper.

The X-Men point is probably true - even accounting for inflation from last year it's not going to make a huge difference, and by the end of its run Deadpool will almost certain come out, marginally, on top. To the tune of a couple of million.

Interestingly that means that it lost a lot of fans of the X-Men overseas - because the US gross was that much stronger (by about 120 million dollars) so despite having a better gross it may have perversely hurt the franchise quite badly in reputational terms. Then again the difference may be due to it being aimed at a crowd who couldn't get into showings in a lot of countries - the under 15s, mainly. The good news for FOX either way is that they've proved they can make a successful movie on less than half what they've typically been trying to spend - trimming the fat from a franchise that's always been marred by unnecessarily bloated casts and pointless music-video set pieces, so even if grosses come down for the main franchise they'll still be making money.

BvS has already outgrossed Fantfourstic (and most likely will even relative to production costs of the two), but in reputational terms again the future is uncertain: it's possible that it won't make the enormous amounts of money back that it needs to break even, which would also hurt it long term since there would be little chance of continuing as planned without that audience share.

No he didn't.

Firstly we know this because if Goyer's script wasn't used and Goyer had no input, WGA rules mean he doesn't get a writing credit, just a story credit (if his story was used). Writer credits have specific meanings and ignoring them or failing to credit properly results in writer's strikes.

Secondly we know this because by the time Terrio was brought in, filming had already begun.

There are limits to what can be done in that kind of situation. However, I agree with you that a great deal of the problems with this movie probably came from Terrio, and the fact that Affleck was said to be doing his own rewrites also places the blame squarely with him.

>>81216482

Is WB sweating balls at this point over Justice League's film date being so close? You have to think they're watching this coming weekend very nervously. If this movie tanks hard in its second weekend they have almost no time to make changes to Justice League.

Two kids sitting in the theater with their mom behind me too. They asked a bunch of questions in the start, then turned very, very quiet. Must have been boring and confusing as hell.

>Bruce is carried out of hole by bats
>Is that how Batman gets his powers??
>Batman is the bad one right?
>Do they hate Superman?
>Is Superman the evil one?

Just meant normal people don't sperg out over small, or sometimes big, changes to the characters. They're not as hard to please as /co/ autists. But they still want the movie to be good, or at least entertaining.

No blockbusters are coming out until Civil War in May. Maybe Jungle Book but even then what else? This movie is going to linger for weeks in the top three. if not number 1. They'll have made their money by the time Civil War hits. If it stays on track like Dark Knight Rises (and it has very similar numbers) it will be more than fine.

Whats the debate here? The numbers we have and current trends point to it being a big success like several of the big comic book movies last year. What makes this any different?

How come Batman and his jolly brigade of villains never visit metropolis that much and vice versa?

I remember hearing something about warner bros needing this movie to make a billion to make it worth their while

>and the fact that Affleck was said to be doing his own rewrites also places the blame squarely with him
Affleck said he wasn't involved in the writing process at all and the rumor of him rewriting dialogue in his Batsuit wasn't true. I think he purposefully avoided getting involved because he knew the movie was shit once he found out what it was really going to be about.
