They actually haven't confirmed the gender identity of Pidge yet. The thing is Pidge's VA is a woman, and the character looks pretty androgynous as is. Now it's not unusual for little boys to be played by grown women, but Pidge is not some 7 year old kid. Pidge in this one looks to be around 14 years old.
So it seems like to me they did a Genderswap for Pidge. Which is fine. Voltron Force was always a sausage party anyway, and who the fuck cares about Pidge's gender? Spread the dicks out I say.
Pidge could also be trans, but this is a 2016 cartoon, not a 2026 show. Not very likely, but would be nice to see some LGBT characters included in this universe.

But then I remember most of this crew worked on Korra. In fact, the pre-production code name for this show amongst the staff was "Korra 2.0"...
But on the OTHER other hand, Korra did alot of things RIGHT too, it was mostly the forced romance and convoluted ass-pull plot resolutions that spoiled the series...
I mean, I really want to get behind this. There's a serious void in the action-adventure cartoon world that needs filling and Voltron somehow seems to keep cropping back up in pop-culture for really strangely unexplained reasons...

It was pretty generic, the only thing of note was that the main bad guy was the bastard half-breed son of a human woman his dad raped (hence his weird Oedipus complex with the Princess, who looked just like her) and the absolutely shocking sadistic violence the show had so much of. Japanese shows back then were a fair bit bloodier than American ones but even accounting for that Golion was ridiculously gory. There's an episode where the bad guys drown an entire town in the molten hot heated blood of the people they've already murdered. And that's contrasted with stuff like the Princesses' silly little tame mice running around doing Disney shit. It's surreal ultraviolence. The studio who dubbed it picked the one show that needed censoring the most.
