See Chaika, the girl in the picture. She has pale skin and lives in a european inspired world, which would imply she is white, but if a live action version of this anime ever came out she would probably be played by a japanese actress. She's got a definite look but no actual race.
The Homestuck human characters all have pale enough skin for it to be stylised as pure white (and when we see their skin colours in trickster mode it is peach coloured), and straight hair. But they still literally have no race, like Chaika does, even though they have a canonical look. (which is pale skin, average builds, straight hair).
Of course if you look at the background of the authors you can tell what race they are mean to be. Whoever drew Chaika was probably imagining her as a Japanese girl, and Hussie was probably imagining the kids as white. The 'aracial' thing was a way to get out of having a not particularly diverse story. JK Rowling did the same thing with the new Harry Potter play.
